BRD may but I think it will be harder to get new disc without using something like amazon.com as soon as the next five years. Not sure what you mean. Do you mean simply ordering the disc on line VS going to a store? Sure, the Internet has been slowly killing B&M stores for a while now.

I walked into Best Buy the other day, wanted to buy a new blu ray. They no longer have a selection of BRD. I found what I was looking for online. I guess I think the B&M stores death is speeding up.

No surprise. I haven't been into a Best Buy in, oh, 5 years so I can't comment on what they offer. I rent Blu Ray from Netflix and if I find some rare title I want to own I buy it through Amazon. Or if it's something I really want right away I'll look at Costco or Frys Electronics. Frys has a huge selection.

I order most of my disc from the UK, they have great quality cases and you don't have to pay VAT.

Interesting. I was only asking because I wondered about you saying you ordering discs from the UK. I assume you must have a region free player or something?

Where I live we have a chain of stores (28 locations) called Newbury Comics. They sell new CD's, vinyl and BR/DVD but they also have huge inventory of used as well. They don't list the used stuff on the website, but if you are in New England you can visit your local store and look for movies, CD's and the like. Ive bought many used CD's for a dollar or two and movies for $3 or $4 dollars.. www.newburycomics.com

The Block Buster closest to me was on the way to my office so I stopped by almost daily to switch out movies and such on the monthly pass they offer. The staff all knew who I was and were pretty cool to me. We would talk at the counter about new releases, video games, movies we liked and didnt. It was a good start to my day. Then one day I went in and the entire staff literally had been replaced. Not a single person who had been there before was still employed. I inquired about this and they informed me that they had closed a store in a neighboring city and brought all those employees to this store. These employees just didn't care, despite going in almost daily they never bothered to even act like they remembered me from yesterday. Then, more and more I would go in and unless I was willing to be there 15 minutes before the store opened and wait in line, the Tuesday new release I was after was already gone. I would go in every day to see if a copy had been returned and it would take 2 weeks or more for me to actually get one. Eventually I got tired of the new releases (Blu or DVD) never being in stock and the lifeless staff and canceled my pass. I've gone back probably 5 or 6 times and the Blu ray I'm after is never in.
I had stopped using Red Box since they made the deal to hold certain new releases for 28 days. I decided to give them another try, not many new releases have had me chomping at the bit to be seen day one anyway. I found the ease of finding a movie online and driving to the location I knew had it in stock, to be much more rewarding than my movie less Block Buster visits, with a lifeless staff.
I still don't think Blu Ray's death is around the corner, nor physical media. There has been some discussion on here as of late about this, and that us Blu Ray enthusiasts are a small niche group. That possibly, the market won't cater to us for much longer, but I ask how big is the niche group for vinyl compared to Mp3 downloads or cd's? I would guess it's a much smaller niche than Blu ray is with movies, but it's still here and holding on. Why, cause there are people who will buy them. As I and many others will still happily buy Blu Ray over streaming.

You are correct, maybe its the face-to-face that I miss. The face-to-face is important. It's part of the reason I'm so looking forward to events like Emofest (shameless plug ) because I feel it's important, at least once a year or so, for people to meet in person and truly get a feel for one another. Too often I feel things are misinterpreted via forums such as these, as even the best of intentions can be seen as "attacks." I feel having some semblance of person to person contact at some level helps to eliminate confusion as well as foster a stronger community. Completely agree on the face to face. It's easier to communicate, respect and understand where a member comes from when actually spending time in person with the Lounge member behind the keyboard. Events like EmoFest(another shameless plug ) have brought about many friends for me, and this is what brings an on-line community even closer when that member you are conversing with isn't just a screen name on a website. Back on topic, I've exclusively used RedBox for blu-rays and Amazon On-Demand for HD streaming. I just hope that actual media never comes obsolete.

And the Norwood location has a killer vinyl section, tons of new and used

We had this discussion in another thread, no? My feeling is that broadband Internet penetration is too poor and too slow for streaming to ever completely kill HD physical media. BRD will stay around for a very long time. I absolutely agree David. I live less than 20 miles from the largest city in Alabama, yet I am stuck with a maximum internet speed of 3Mbps and no hope for more on the horizon.

Not sure which Best Buy you were at, but the one in Richfield, MN (their HQ/Flagship store which probably isn't a fair comparison) has an extensive selection of BRDs on display - including a couple Blu-ray 'bargain bins with numerous titles for less that $10. I also wandered over to the 'Magnolia' HT section to see the new OLED 55" HDTV with curved face display, but was not impressed! This is the only store in the country with this OLED out (I think). I was much more impressed with the 84" Sony 4K on display, but for $25K I SHOULD be!

I'm also a dinosaur that prefers physical media over streaming or going to a Red Box, the closest being about 2 miles away. I DO have an Amazon Prime account so I can choose to get a disc shipped free OR stream the lower-quality version. I'm so lazy now that I no longer want to get up to pop in a BD, so I **bleeped** all my movies to a Synology DS1512+ and a couple AMS Venus DS3R packed with 3 TB drives. Even merged those pesky two-disc LoTR BD's into a single file.

I liked all three. I didn't care about face to face. Most of the employees that checked me out couldn't care less but I guess it differs according to the store. Blockbuster was too expensive for me to rent until I got their three out at a time in store (not mail). I lived very close so I really made my money back and then some, games included. But then they closed. And it was sad. But the only reason I would choose blockbuster was their unlimited passes. Their rental prices are too steep - including redbox. I usually keep movies for at least 2-3 days as I rent multiples. So now it's netflix, hulu and the library which has a huge collection of movies.

Face-to-face interaction with someone who knew what they were talking about in a record store, eh? I remember those days at Tower Records or even the Virgin Store. And in the SF Bay area the great Rasputin's stores in Berkeley and San Jose... and my favorite used record store Streetlight in San Jose... the smell of vinyl, clove cigarettes, weed and patchouli are strong in memory. I actually met my second ex-wife in the Tower Records store on Bascom Ave. in San Jose, where she was the singles buyer and I was a college radio programmer there for a promotional appearance by this new band called R.E.M. In those days you could hear new music when you walked in, talk to the clerks who for the most part were music fans, browse the stacks, listen to samples, and oh yea buy. And the stores expanded into video/DVD etc. as those markets grew. But over the years the Internet killed them. Streetlight is still there last time I was in town, and Rasputin's is still there in a diminished capacity... I really don't miss those B&M days as the convenience of listening and buying on line is just too appealing, especially as I've grown older. But the memories are nice.
