And by the way, their new Foundation processor has a very Emotiva look to it. Hmm. I see a strong family resemblance... just move things around a little bit...

I would like something stand alone with no keyboard, no mouse. Another piece of audio gear that resides along with my other audio gear. Like I said, check the Vortexbox appliance link. I have, I've been following you on that and been considering it seriously. I think you need something like the logitech squeezebox to control it and I am hoping someone comes out with something that is all in one. I am no hurry and waiting to see what Emotiva comes up with. But yes, the Vortexbox looks cool and at a good price. I have no smart phone or xbox or anything like that. I don't network or anything. My pc is a 14 year old pentium 4 with 1 gig of ram. 2 years from now I will be living on a 60 foot sail boat in the middle of the pacific and looking for someway to take all my digital media with me in a simple package.

The cool thing about the Vortexbox appliance is it is ready to go and you really only need a USB DAC to use it if you want to put it in your audio system. Then you can control it using the web from another computer on your home network or using any phone or iPod type device with one of the available apps. It does require a keyboard and monitor be used to initially get it set up but after that it's "headless" and silent and will automatically rip any CD or DVD you put into it. I know I sound like a salesman but I am a fan of this machine and the software.

There are many reasons for someone to want a solution from Emotiva.
I just hope that after Emofest we know whether or not they are moving forward with it. Also would love to know rough timetable ( 2013, 2014, 2015)
I personally love the local control feature of the squeezebox.

Re the noise coming from a computer's cooling fans and harddrives, some 120 mm low rpm case fans are completely inaudible even at a less than 10' distance. My cheap 1 year old laptop is inaudible at 10' distance also, and my (also cheap) old netbook PC is inaudible at 1' distance.

On the other hand it was $300 to assemble a fan-less Atom-based music server for Vortexbox with a conventional hard drive. Pony up for solid state drive(s) and the system would be completely quiet and have zero moving parts. But for me that is of little advantage. My listening room is not so quiet, particularly when the dogs settle in to chewing on their bones. By the time they tire of that and fall asleep I'm usually falling asleep too!

I think that there is a group of people who want a traditional stereo component. Something that can be worked from a remote or front panel display. Something designed by people who know how to build stereo equipment.
Vortexbox, j.river, Mac, PC, foobar, android control, iPod control, iPad control. Some people just don't want to mess with it all. Quiet or not a PC based system has some of these elements.
I have been working on computers since I rebuilt my i286 in college. I figured out the chip to upgrade it to one meg of RAM. To be honest I don't want to mess with it and I know what I am doing. I've tried Vortexbox, and just last three weeks have run a XP, SSD based J.River system with a V-Link converter. Honestly I found the control cumbersome ( having to use iPod / IPad) and in the end it didn't sound as good as my Squeezebox Touch.
I personally think that Emotiva could offer a great product in this space. I also really want local storage capability. Hopefully we will know by this time next week.

I have my NAS in a different room, but it's hardwired down to a PC that is in my listening room. But, the PC is dead silent...no noise at all...shocking that it is so silent. I didn't look yet to see if it is fanless/passive cooling, but if it has a fan - I can't hear a thing.
And, controlled with my simple logitech wireless keyboard and video out going to my projector, I have the screen I need and controls I need to operate it all. And I can surf the web with it as a bonus, should I develop the urge to do so.
At Emofest, I am really excited to hear what Emotiva is planning as a media server. For me, it needs to top my sound and convenience level I already have. And, if it doesn't top at least 1 of the 2 w/o degrading the other, it won't be a product for me.

Yes, there are some very quiet 140 mm (and larger) fans also. The latest ASUS motherboards come with a feature called Fan Xpert 2 and IMO that can completely eliminate the need for a separate fan controller. I would pair that with an affordable case that has been designed specifically for quietness, from a brand that specializes in this kind of thing (like Fractal Designs, or Nanoxia, for example). Some of these cases can hold alot of harddrives and some of the latest motherboards come with alot of SATA ports on them. With rubber grommets to keep the metal parts of the case from vibrating as they absorb the vibrations of the harddrives, as well as with acoustic isolation lined along the interior of the case, the system can be made sufficiently quiet for it to become completely inaudible when placed at a reasonable distance from the listening position and when surrounded by a few hard surfaces that are lined in porous absorbers (see pictures in the "Noise Control" section of Ethan Winer's article on acoustic treatment www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html ). Speaking of Intel Atom CPUs, my 3.5 years old €299 netbook uses an 1.60 GHz Atom N270. It is standing at only 3' distance from my listening position, and if I lean towards it so that my ear is at 1' distance from it, depsite the fact it has both a little cooling fan and a 160 GB Hitachi harddrive inside it, it is still completely inaudible.

It doesn't get much simpler than an Apple TV3, which does video as well as audio, with an iPod connected via wifi. Or cheaper at $350 all up. The bonus is you can listen to the iPod via headphones anywhere on the boat. Cheers Gary

Love the idea of living on the pacific. You need to find a squeezebox Touch, use a powered external drive ( preferably SSD) loaded with all your music. Squeezeserver runs on the Touch itself. Use the included remote to use it or touchscreen. Easy easy easy.
Other option is pickup a Marantz NA7004 on clearance @$399. Pug in a USB drive and you are done. You could also get a large iPod fill it with music and plug it into the Marantz.

When I was talking to Lonnie about Emotiva's streaming media player he said that they were looking at the OLIVE Music Streamers as the model for audio media streaming and CDs. Click on the link below to see what genre they were considering. www.olive.us/products/music_servers/olive6hd/compare.html

I hope they base them off the olive one rather than the previous gen models.

What's all this talk about the Krell (hey, am I in these photos )? THIS is the Krell machine: You do have to be careful, this unit can get very, very HOT: Anne Francis stars in Forbidden Planet Oh-oh at the late night, double feature, picture show! One of my favorite songs.

The Marantz says it is AirPlay compatible, but it does not stream Apple Lossless...

I'm not sure what the point of it is. All you need is a NAS server and a decent DAC. You can do that for under $1000.00 One advantage it has is that it has a built-in display, so you can browse a server without a TV connected (though it would be better if it had a remote with the display on the remote). But of course, like everything else from Krell, it is grossly overpriced.
