Hey all, Just got a new xpa-5. Turns out I don't have the speaker cables I thought. If I run a higher guage temporarily, am I risking damage to amp or speakers or just suffering sound quality until I upgrade.
Thanks

Thanks What gauge do you currently have? If you have enough, double it up. I do this even with 12 ga for the runs that go through the floor to the rear of my room.

it may be 20 gauge, just wondering if I can damage anything?

I doubt you'd mess anything up. Just don't have a rock party. Lower guage (ie thicker) wires will likely sound better depending on your application. I use 12 guage. Walmart has them dirt cheap in the car audio section.

How long is your cable run?
As others have said, I doubt you could hurt anything, but you'll be wasting amp power and your speakers may sound lifeless.

Thanks If you decide you want to spend a little money on really good, relatively inexpensive cable, I'd recommend Kimber 4PR or 8PR. Cost/value I think they are great cables. Another poster also sugested making your own braded cable, that would work also, the theory of EMI rejection in braided cable is sound. Hope this helps Mark

Thinner wire equals more resistance which means changes in frequency response, or, in more extreme circumstances damage to output stages.
