I want to back up all my 400 movies onto a hard drive. 1. I have to buy a bluray drive. this I know 2. who uses what software to back up their movies and do you have any screen shots? 3. Do you compress your movies or leave them unaltered? I would be afraid compressing them would lower the quality but what do I know. Im a noob at this. ANy held would be appreciated. AND NOOOOOOO Im not copying rented movies!!! I BUY ALL MINE. I collect Steelbooks and collectors editions. By backing up them all I wont have to handle them anymore

regardless of if you bought them or not, copying them is still breaking the law since you have to break the encryption to do so. (that is actually the illegal part, not the copying itself) That said, you can start by reading this.

I use MakeMKV for ripping. As well I use Mezzmo to stream to the Oppo. I love the setup, keeps the area clean without a bunch of Blu-ray Discs kicking around. PM me if you have any questions.

I like DVD Fab. I haven't used it for Blue Ray, but the DVD version is great. I backed up a bunch on DVD to stream to my HTPC. I believe that MKV is compressed while straight copies are full bandwidth / they take up a lot of space.
Good Luck.

Most bluRays are encrypted and your Ripper will fail. Rippers don't have a decryptor as that would be illegal, but all the good rippers will link to a decryptor if one is available. "AnyDVD" decryptor is available from offshore (away from the reach of courts); it is pay software, but with a 30 day trial, if you work fast... www.videohelp.com/tools/AnyDVD

I use DVDFab, too. Has worked flawlessly to rip all my DVDs and BR discs. This means that I can move three cabinets of physical discs to the basement for storage, great deal. I typically rip to iso or folder format. My players will then play it at full resolution (both audio and video) and still have the menu structure intact.

I use AnyDVDHD to archive all my DVDs BluRays and HDDVDs. I never compress mine. I store them at full fidelity. Its not free, but it is very reliable and is updated constantly.

I use Make MKV and rip uncompressed .mkv files to a 2TB external hard drive in which I have connected to my Oppo 103 which will playback the .mkv format, uncompressed is obviously just as good as the physical disc itself.

I have used both makemkv and anydvdhd in conjunction with ripbot264. Both work quite well, but I prefer makemkv for how easy it is. Do you have 400 DVDs, or 400 blu-rays? I ask, because you're going to need a reasonably sized array (I would guess 10-15TB for uncompressed blu-rays) to hold all of them.

I'm getting into this myself. I have been looking at using MakeMKV to rip to a hard drive then playing that through my Chromcast on my system.
