I built my own bi-wire cables using Canare 4S11 cable from Blue Jeans Cable and banana plugs from Parts Express and they came out great. No need to go any large than 14 gauge for that short of a run.

@darkranger
My previous amp was a VTL 45/45 - the first generation VTL. My current amp is an XPA-100.
My speaker is a Focus Audio 68 - not the current model but the older one, with Cardas posts. (I also have an AE subwoofer.)
Others have reported similar stuff, e.g. the guys at Siltech. And there are other references to the fact that using gold plugs creates a characteristic sound.
What I wanted to say was that making your own cable allows for experimentation. I went to the MIT cable site and priced the lengths I'd need for my room - that came to about $90,000. I'm glad to say that some experimentation has allowed me to get a sound that I'm really, really happy with.
Whether there's any difference or not may depend on your system, and/or your brain. :-)
