Today is a very good day... I just made payment on a brand new set of JBL speakers. I've been lusting after these things since I discovered them some months ago, but the lusting has been years in the making... first it was Theophany, then PSB and finally the JBL's... it's been a long wait - now just one more sleep to go before delivery!!!! Oh, and the sale I made on a few dormant items has allowed me to replace, the center, surrounds and sub also... JBL Studio 590 frontsJBL Synthesis LS CenterJBL ES10 surroundsJBL Studio 550p subI plan to do a direct comparision of the new JBL sub with my existing PSB sub and may be a bit of a swap happen if I perfer two of the same, being the best performer... Yep... I'm quite excited...

It makes me happy to see someone else referring to sleeps as a unit of measurement...
Good for you, please post your thoughts when they arrive.

Trolley Congrats!! I also have been lusting after those JBL 590s. I'm very anxious to hear back from you , your thoughts on them. I wasn't sure if they would be much of an upgrade from my L890s I am currently running. Keep us posted.

Yeah for sure man, I actually posted a little bit in your thread 'Great JBL Speaker Porn' ...Haven't had the pleasure of hearing the L890's, but the 1 hour audition I had with the 580's left me gob-smacked, expecting even greater greatness from the 590's ... I will certainly keep this thread updated as things progress - including some more porn

And here they are:After a one-day delay in delivery (which seemed like an eternity) the new JBL's finally arrived. Thursday night I got them home and hooked up. Normally once the kids are in bed, I'd do dishes then sit down with a coffee and watch some TV with my wife - but not this night... :-) It's funny how even though having warned my wife about their size and putting a tape measure up to give her an idea... it never quite prepared her for the sheer reality of the JBl Studio 590's ...These guys are BIG... not bad big... but awesome big ...at least that's what I think. Nicki (my wife) was leaning toward 'politely pissed off' at first ...but then started to simmer, and now she's pretty comfy with them, it just took some time to sink in and adjust. Anyway, being that I wanted her to be as happy as me, I direct connected the HDMI cable from the HTPC to the TV so she could watch her TV show while I set about shutting the audio system down and commence the hookup, which involved running out some new 4-core 12AWG cable that I scavenged from work. TV watching done, Nicki departed and left me to it ...I turned the receiver and amps on, and thought I'd quickly check all was working with some gentle tunes. My first impression was a bit perplexed - Although the 590's seemed to image reasonably well, they sounded kinda sh#t ...so I turned the volume up a bit, and a bit more, and a bit more... but nothing changed, in fact the level wasn't actually increasing. At this point I slap myself on the forehead while remembering I had routed the HDMI source directly to the TV... DOH! ...I think there's another thread here I can post this story in ...!?!? So, round two, and we have lift-off... I was planning to do a quick test and then proceed directly to some quick phase and SPL tuning to ensure the 590's, new sub (JBL Studio 550P) and PSB SubSeries-300 were all in harmony ...However, the live jazz/blues band that had just landed itself in my lounge kinda distracted me from that plan. Rude? perhaps... but OMG was I enjoying myself, I simply could not believe what I was hearing, detail, clarity and textures I'd never had present before, and the JBL's weren't making a sound, everything was floating in space in front of me... I seriously could not wipe the giant grin off my face. Eventually after only three tracks, I forced my finger on the pause button, and poked my head in the bedroom to see if Nicki was awake and tell her, she seriously needed to come listen to this. She was asleep, so left her to it... I figured that seeing as the band had taken a break (music was paused), and instead of risking being hypnotised by the music again, I would take the opportunity to do the SPL and phase tuning on the subs, just quickly, as I was itching to get back to the music. Got the subs and front matched up to a satisfactory level - as I planned to dedicate the next night specifically to this, so wasn't going to spend too much time. On their own, the Studio 590's go pretty low, I later (next night) measured 30Hz at 0dB, then they quickly drop away (24Hz at -18dB), this was measured in room at 30mm (1 foot) from speaker. However rooms being what they are the subs are still needed to even out the low frequencies in the room. But more on that later - maybe in a follow-up post... With the subs in, I switched away from 'pure direct' mode (with no bass management) ...to a bass-managed mode - and here we go again - hypnotised, instantly!! ...now I had the amazing new mid-bass to highs as well as the uber lows. Normally I've always crossed-over my fronts (set them to small) and just let subs take the lows. tTe thing I've found here is that with the ability to drop as low as 30Hz, the 590's actually assist the subs really well and give the ability to really smooth out the low frequencies by running them at full-range with the subs overlapping from 80Hz down... I'm thinking I will post a bit more on my low frequency management adventures along with some SPL readings if anyone is keen to see/hear more on this. Getting back to the music, the 590's are simply incredible, vocals are clean, clear and focused with zero hint of the 'horn yelling' stigma created by lesser performing portable PA units. Even at ridiculous volumes I never got a hint of distortion and harshness, they just kept climbing while staying life-like and composed. The mids just leap out at you, and the mid-bass is tight and full of texture. I really love these speakers. We had some friends come over on Saturday for a barbecue (it's coming into summer over here) and my mate loves good music and movies, and he like em loud. He had recently lent me the latest Daft Punk album 'Random Access Memories' which I had not gotten around to listening to. We cranked it up and within moments we had stopped talking and were just sitting on the couch rocking our heads back and forth with the odd 'nose-scrunch' and 'bottom-lip-bite' throwing in as the grooves called for it. Before long six tracks had passed and we decided we should probably go outside and get the barbecue ready before the wives gave us a lecture. So we opened up the lounge slider to the deck so we could continue our private concert outside. The reason I feel like telling you all this, is that even outside the sound was amazing!! ...The band still there, coming from the lounge and the vocals, mids and highs still cutting through the outside air like a precision blade, and the lows were still moving our chests. We seriously couldn't believe it... So, as you can tell, I really love these speakers and am so glad I discovered them. I highly encourage anyone to dismiss what they think they know about compression drivers and horns and actually go listen to these. JBL have been doing this for 60'odd years, and boy do they know what they're doing. I know this 'blab' may seem a little 'chatty' and overly excited, but blame the speakers and the fact that since Thursday I have not had a single early night... these speakers are way too enticing, engaging and ridiculously fun! Oh yeah, the centre and surrounds are new too... The end ...of this post

A nice review Trolley! I've always been a big JBL fan myself, back with my first set (a pair of JBL L88+12s that I upgraded of course!). The 590's are big huh? And the wife is now warming to them too? (I can still remember Mrs. Mad Norseman's face when first viewing the giant dual 10" JBL ES100s when the FedEx guy left them in our foyer a couple years ago,...had to get them from Birmingham, England too! hee, hee! ). Please write up another review later after you've done more experimentation, and settled in with your new babies for awhile... Thanks again for posting this!

Congrats on those cool speakers. IMO though, two-way speakers should always X-ed at 80 Hz when a sub is present. Makes it easier for the woofers to produce the midrange (1,500 Hz here). This doesn't apply for speakers with a dedicated midrange as long as the amp is up to it. In the end, women always learn to love big ones. You are in the wrong thread anyway, as this is the Emotiva speaker Forum...

Thanks, and yep they still big... although the next morning she's said "they aren't actually so bad", and has gotten used to them. Since these pics I have spaced them out a bit further to 45 degrees from centre seat - other than the acoustic benefits gained this has also made their presence a lot less intimidating. She's happy now :-) Congrats! Trolley! Look forward to hearing your long term comments. Looks like your enjoying them though. I really like the way they look. Cheers, I really hope you manage to audition some of these and compare them with your L890's

Thanks man, I'll have another play around with the mains x-over paying more attention to the mids - I was pretty focused on the lows... Will let you know how it goes and throw up some SPL readings
