Well, my modest system is really sounding wonderful lately, and the wife and I have been so enjoying it. Thank you to Emotiva for great products we could afford and tips and hints from you guys to tweak the system. But on to the post proper.
So I was listening to some Tomita that came up on the random play from by Squeezebox through my XDA-2 to the UMC-200 to the UPA-200 (Area 51 buy!!!!) through the speaker wires (another Area 51 buy from the previous year) to my XRM 6.2s The specific track was Mars from Tomita's version of the planets. It is very electronic and playful and I had to put down the paperwork I was doing to listen when it hit me, I was hearing stuff behind me. This is from a two channel source listening in the direct mode, so there was no multi-channel stuff going on with my processor. But there it was, weird, phazey stuff happening behind and around the sides of the listening area, way away from the usual stereo soundstage.
How does the recording do that? Is it out of phase material that my brain thinks is behind me? I did not turn off the multi channel amp to make sure, but this was my Squeezebox playing a stereo file through the UMC set to direct. So how did the recording do that?

I think that was originally recorded in SQ or Stereo Quadraphonic.

Interesting! But how does my two channel rig make it sound like more? It was in fact, the last Quad RCA vinyl pressing. I am listening to a flac file ripped from the CD. So how, oh how does it do what it does?

Phase shifts and time delays. It's pretty cool what can be done. Have you ever heard one of the new soundbars? Pretty convincing 5 channel surround from one enclosure containing three speakers...

Try listening to "Whole lotta love" by zeppelin on a well set up 2 speaker system, you may feel yourself spinning. Carver's "Sonic Holography" was pretty amazing back in the 80's.

I have had this happen as well. Especially when I had MMGs in my system for a short while. I would be playing stereo sources, and you could swear that there was surround activity going on. My system has been two speakers, two amps, and a stereo preamp for a long while now. No other speakers or amps even hooked up. I don't know what causes this, but it's really cool when it happens.

Could be reflective sound you know Peace

Could be reflective sound you know Peace Most likely it was with the MMGs, especially because I have my setup in a very small room right now. I did, however, get the same effect when I tried them in my ex-GFs living room, and it was a fairly large sized room. Either way, I agree that is due to reflections and things (there is literally no other explanation), but it is cool none-the-less.
