Hi guys, I'v been real happy with my Emotiva Amp. Its friday and i was excited to have a good weekend and right when everyone like Tech support closed down, I turned my emotiva, but it gave a burning smell and shut-down. I cannot turn it back on now. Could it have been the smell of a blown fuse? or is something serious. If its a fuse, how do I change it? ...
I really want to do immediately, so I can enjoy in during the weekend. Thanks for some quick help/tips.

Fuses usually don't smell when they blow as the fuseable link is inside a glass tube. If I remember rightly the fuse/s in XPA-5's are internal, so you will have to take the cover off and look. Removing the cover to check fuses does not void the warranty. If the fuse/s look OK then it's back to Emotiva for warranty service.
Cheers Gary

And he is back!
Well, I am a bit dissappointed, my XPA-5 died just after its warranty expiry. The fuses are ok, though I suspect the problem in the Power Supply - since the unit is completely dead. There are no signs of burned out IC modules or capacitors or resistors.
The problem occurred as I moved into my new bigger house and I was cranking up the volume to drive my 2 frontals, but as I reached about -1 db (which I could never try before at my previous place), and it just like a puff died. I could not hear any clipping nor were there any other warning signs (except the burning smell).
So now what do I do. My options: a) Repair? - i need to be prepared to spend around $300 b) Get a new XPA-5? I'm not as inclined to it since it needed warranty service 2 yrs back as well. c) Get a new XPR-5? I'm thinking about it, but do you think it is worth spending that money? Magnepan 1.6's are picky and do require high-current amp, but is XPR-5 going to give me a substantially upgraded sound??? d) what other option I have?
My current equipment: Speakers(4): Magnepan 1.6 Sub(1): Outlaw LFM-1 EX Amp: Emotiva XPA-5 Processor: Marantz AV 7005

If you turn it back on, it'll probably goto protection mode right away. That's what mine did, flashed red on amp module #5. That's the module that emotiva replaced. I'm no technician though.
As far as xpr-5 is concerned, that's what I upgraded to and yes the difference is very noticeable. It was a big upgrade for me.
But with your smallish speakers, I wonder if xpa-5 gen 2 will be the perfect replacement. And it's a lot cheaper.

No, its not going into protection mode, it is laying completely dead, since there is no current flowing through (110/240v led's dont turn on) Could you please describe the 'difference is noticeable'? Some narrative would be helpful ..... like is the difference only noticeable at higher volumes, or it is a totally different experience/sound, at low or high volumes ... like bass is much richer/thumpy/crispy even at low volumes ... uppertones/the piano sounds more lifelike ?

Hi Gary, could you (and others also please) provide your inputs on my options a/b/c/d as wrote in earlier post

Wow I can't believe you managed to fry that beast! Must've been LOUD. Maybe you might want to step up to an XPR2 for the fronts and have the XPA-5 drive whatever is left with the four remaining modules, that is if it does not fault. Otherwise get an XPR-5. The Gen 2 XPA 5 puts out the same power, so you may be pushing the limits on that one too...

I am just returning home from listening to NAD T977 amp with Magnepan 1.7s and they sounded substantially better than my previous setup. I dont know if the sound treatment in the dealers room made that difference, but the difference was clear. So now I am confused, T977 I can get at a similar price to XPR-5.
Please advice, you all have vanished!

I doubt that you'd be disappointed with the XPR-5 and it will give you tons of power. It sounds like an amp that's more powerful than the XPA-5 would be in your best interest.

Let me know if your looking to sell your fried XPA-5. Mine just started tripping to protect for no reason at all and is out of warranty - and I'd rather have some spare parts for the $300 I'd have to spend on the repair.

The NAD is a nice amp. If you are in the EU I would not hesitate to get the NAD. If you are in the US, the XPR-5.
Pretty easy choice.
