I just hooked up my ERC-2 a couple nights ago, I've had an ERC-1 now for a while. So I pop a disc in the -2 and I am immediately surprised at how loud the drive mechanism is when the disc is spinning. I was kneeling down and the player was eye level and I was no more than a foot or two away, so I just figured it was normal and I was only hearing it since I was so close, and chances are my ERC-1 is and has been the same way.
I go over to my listening position which puts my head a solid 14' or so away from the player. I mute the music and sure enough I can still hear the disc spinning. Now I know my ERC-1 wasn't this loud. I run grab my -1, plug it in, pop in a disc and hit play......quiet. Hit play on the -2 again.....way loud.
Any members out there experience this? Anyone have one of each who would be willing to compare them for me to see if there -2 is substantially louder than their -1? I broke it in over the last couple days for about 10hrs total seeing if it would quiet the drive with no such luck. I have 2 Sony CD players, a Sony and Pioneer DVD player, and an Oppo BR player and they too are all quieter than my ERC-2. Kind of disappointing for sure. Does anyone know if they changed the drive motors from one unit to the next?
I am going to keep it, but not sure it's worth the shipping to send it back to Emotiva to have them take a look at it. After all, it can't be heard while music is playing. I guess I'd just like to know if this is a known phenomenon or if this unit is just a fluke?
Thanks.

KSE, FYI here below are several posts I made some time back (July 2011) about my new ERC-2. The noise issue is only a problem when I am quite close to the machine and the room is dead quiet. If I for example, advance forward from track 1 to track 10 with my remote on a CD while playing, I can very slightly hear the laser moving as it advances and seeks out track #10 from about 8' away, again only if the room is dead quiet . This no longer bothers me as I almost never am aware of this under normal circumstances and use. On the other hand I really like the new Toshiba slot loader in the ERC-2, much smoother than on the ERC-1. Emo sent me an upgrade CD-R to fix the 1st track skip issue and also the Redbook layer on the SACD issue. I now print out my own owner's manuals. The Brother B&W laser printer HL5250DN printer is a workhorse and has printed out many tens of thousands of two sided (duplex) pages with zero issues and only occasional jams. We buy Zerox printing paper in 800 page stacks at Costco. (July 17, 2012) " I just received my ERC-2 Friday and I plan to perhaps do a review here soon with a lot more detail than below. I do plan to first call Emo in the next day or so to see if some problems I found are exclusive to my unit. The only reason I even mention these below is to see if any other ERC-2 owner's here found the same issues.
I have identified the below problems that bother me so far. These are not connected with any SQ issues. However, they are items that I find initially a little irritating since I'm quite picky.
*.....defective Emotiva Music Sampler CD (first track noise from transport, disc hole not round or disc shape distorted?)
*.....Noisy transport and track advance (seemingly louder than the ERC-1)
.....won't play Redbook layer on hybrid SACD ("undisc" error on Norah Jones, will check other SACD's)
*.....No owner's manual
.....And believe it or not, the same exact skip problem again on the first track, after power on only, just like with the ERC-1
.....Free Emotiva t-shirt too tight (my fault since I need to loose some weight! )
* These are issues that I have read about from at least one other owner."
" UPDATE (July 18, 2011)
I talked to Janna and then Joe at Emotiva Tech Support this morning. We discussed all of these items below and I have noted his responses underlined for your information.
*.....defective Emotiva Music Sampler CD (first track noise from transport, disc hole not round or disc shape distorted?) Emotiva is aware of this...perhaps this has been mentioned on the forum, I'm not sure...I forgot to ask him if I could get another but a member online suggested making a CD-R copy, I did that and it works fine with no problem.
*.....Noisy transport and track advance (seemingly louder than the ERC-1) ....................This is normal for the new transport used in the ERC-2. This is not really a problem for me in normal use, only when I'm listening for it with speakers off and it is not a defect.
.....won't play Redbook layer on hybrid SACD ("undisc" error on Norah Jones, will check other SACD's ... another member had 4 that wouldn't play) .................... Emotiva is aware of this. An upgrade will be issued. He said to check back in the future.
*.....No owner's manual .................... This is a go green policy and no manuals will be included. I will print one out for myself.
.....And believe it or not, the same exact skip problem again on the first track, after power on only, just like with the ERC-1 .................... Emotiva is aware of this. An upgrade will be issued. He said to check back in the future
.....Free Emotiva t-shirt too tight (my fault since I need to loose some weight! ) .................... Joe said to get my fat ass down to the gym and start working out! ... Just kidding here, we didn't discuss that issue.
Very friendly and professional help by Janna and Joe. Janna helped me with a last minute order issue on the sale, what a sweetheart! Joe went right down the line and answered all my concerns and confirmed it was not a problem with my specific ERC-2. I'm a happy nut. Great company!
THANKS EMOTIVA! "

Wow, thanks Chuckie. Yeah, I mean the player isn't going anywhere. I needed a second player and I love my -1, so I knew I wanted a -2. And, true it doesn't really bother me as when music is playing it is a moot point. I was curious more than anything and your info confirmed I wasn't nuts. All good.

I think your using my info to confirm that you, being one of the Lounge Lizards, are not nuts is a little on the presumptuous side!

Hey guys, either of you have any issues with your ERC-1 or ERC-2 pulling in CD's, my ERC-1 is having trouble pulling in CD's and if I slightly help them go in it still won't read them and or play them most of the time. It's out of warranty but I'm thinking I will have to call up Emotiva and see if I can purchase a new transport section and put it in myself Chad
