Hi all,
I just put together a new 2 channel system, it consist of Tekton MLores, the mini-x, and a xda-2. My question is, should I return the mini-x, and upgrade to the upa-200?
Thanks

What is the mini-X not doing for you that you think a UPA-200 may do better? Knowing that will help in answering your question.

My thoughts being that the extra headroom may provide more dynamic oomph. I did notice that the mini-x also started reaching its maximum output at about 103db. I do on occasion like to reproduce concert level sound while listening to classical.

Then I would say "yes" and return it to get the more powerful UPA-200. You might also look at the XPA-200 as I feel it is a more "stout" amp than the UPA-200 and give you that extra "oomph" that you are looking for without concern of over driving it.

Thanks for the reply. Do you think either of those amps would be capable of driving the mlores past 105db? They are rated at 95db

I am with you 100% Even if the Tekton are 95db they have enought internal volume to drive and 8" woofer rated at 200w it a good idea to have a power amp in the 200w range or more.

Get the XPA-200. The upa-200 is not as detailed in the bass as the PA2-50, which is the Sherbourn version of the mini-X. I don't have the XPA-200, but I do have the others and it is a challenge for me. I like the sonic qualities of the pa2-50 better, but my speakers like the extra power that the upa-200 gives.
The XPA-200 should have the same sonic signature as the mini-x with more power.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. Do you think either of those amps would be capable of driving the mlores past 105db? They are rated at 95db I think that is just a math question. If doubling the power results in 3db then at 1 meter 1 watt =95db 2=98 4=102 8=105 16=108 32=111 64=114 128=117 Now, you don't sit 1 meter from your speakers but I should think you have enough wiggle room with the db level above to cover it.

Ok I sent the mini-x and the xda-2 back. Now I'm trying to figure out what to do next. I'm thinking umc-200 so I have the option of creating a theater down the road. As far as the amp is concerned I'm torn between the xpa-2 or two xpa-100.

I would respectfully submit that if you are not building the theater now, don't buy the theater processor now. That processors are the quickest changing market. It is like a computer, obsolete after 3 years. If you are doing 2 channel now get the best 2 channel you can get. If you got say a XSP-1 you could always integrate it into a home theater when the time came.
I vote XPA-2 for the amp.
I have 2 very nice boat anchors, that is home theater processors. The technology moved on, and they are barely useful.
