Hi guys - I received my xpa-1l last week. When I switch on the power there is a buzzing sound for about 30 seconds and then it's dead quiet.
Doesn't seem to affect the sound quality once it's quiet.
Anyone faced this before and how can it be rectified?
Thanks.

Standard audio fault finding technique. Disconnect everything from the XPA-1L except the speaker cabling and the speaker. Plug the XPA-1L straight into the power outlet, no conditioner, no surge protector, no double adaptor, no power board, just the XPA-1L on its own. Check/listen for buzzing. If it's still there then swap speaker cables (same speaker) and listen again. If it's still there then swap speakers and listen again. Sap the XPA-1L to another power outlet. If it's still there swap power leads. If its still there then its most likely the XPA-1L, talk to Emotiva.
If the buzzing doesn't start until you connect a source, then try swapping input cables, swapping sources, plugging the source direct into the power outlets, another power outlet. If you work though it methodically then you will quickly find which cable, source, power outlet etc is causing the issue. Most times it's a cable.
This all takes longer for me to type than it does for you to actually do it. Cheers Gary

Take Gary's advice and do all those tests but just make sure to shut the amp and all other equipment off before disconnecting or connecting any cables.

Thanks Gary. I tried most of it except swap the leads and outlet. Will try it later.
Nevertheless I'll also call Emotiva and check with them.

This was one of two issues with the XPA-1L amplifier during the initial product launch. Emotiva corrected both issues in subsequent batches.
Turn off the amp, disconnect the RCA and/or XLR inputs cables, and wait about one hour. Then turn on the amp with only the speaker connected. If your XPA-1L still exhibits this symptom, contact Emotiva for a replacement. They'll take care of you.

A question, saha001: Is the buzzing you refer coming from the SPEAKERS or is it a mechanical noise coming from the amplifier itself? If the buzz is from the speakers, then the amp needs service. If from the amp, it may just be the transformer windings vibrating until they warm slightly. The latter is an irritation (and maybe a long-term service life issue), but it doesn't necessarily present a hazard to the rest of your system. If the buzz is from the speakers, on the other hand, then the defective component (maybe a capacitor) may fail catastrophically and take your speakers with it.
The good news is that Emotiva's service department is awesome and seems to either fix or replace equipment in short order. Call them & see what they say.

And it dissapears with a click from the amp. Emailed Emotiva awhile ago and awaits their reply.

The "buzzing" emanating from the XPA-1L's chassis is merely start up current -i.e. the capacitors are warming up, the power supplies charging etc. This is normal and depending upon your power circuit it can vary in terms of its "severity" as it relates to level/duration. Nothing is going wrong with the amp (provided it stops) and you're not damaging the amp either. In Class A/B mode (via the switch on the front) you can lessen the affect upon start up, and then switch to A if you'd like. But when powering up in pure Class A mode, and depending on your home wiring, this is something that can happen. If you need further assistance please do not hesitate to contact technical support.

Hi Andrew, Thanks for your prompt explanation. However the humming/buzzing sound is not from the amp but rather from my speaker. One sided to be exact. Cheers

Hi,
For what it is worth: I went through 3 xpa-1L's that had this problem also. Each got replaced and I now have 3 that are completely quiet from the moment I turn them on. Would definitely ask for a replacement.
cheers, -menez

Looks like I'm not the only one. My issue is that as I'm based in Singapore - sending the amp back and forth is cost prohibitive - so hope to get a solution/spare parts that is a cheaper alternative.
On the other hand my XPR-2 for the front mains are awesome.

I never had a problem with my XPA-1Ls, after I first received my pair they did meke some noise after turning them on for a short period. This a believe was seating of the internals. I never did call Emotiva. After the first few weeks the units stopped seating and became dead quiet. The XPA-1L is a great amp and eventually I will make a second purchase of these amps.. My second system is begging for a set of these. But being my second means they will have to wait. Buzz and all , I can offer very little for these " BROKEN " amps but I will entertain any offer you like to rid yourself of these things,,," WINK, WINK,NUDGE, NUDGE!!!!"

Here's a clip of the buzz. Turn your volume up to hear it.
My question is, is this a known issue? or a new one?

It's not a fault per se but rather just the amp "charging up," which I believe I explained yesterday. Regardless, please contact tech support at 877.366.8324 and we'll be happy to assist you in correcting the issue you're experiencing.
