A question for the A/V guys-
I want to play Patricia Barber's "Modern Cool" 24/192 Blu-Ray Pure Audio disc from my Sony S-5100 Blu-Ray player through my DC-1 DAC. 2 channel.
My player has HDMI and coax outputs.
What's the best way to connect these components for highest resolution?
Many thanks!

Hey Bill, nice guitar pal! I would try running it from the coax out. Sadly, I would not be surprised if you cannot do that because I remember some copy protection that only allows the full res data to be sent out from the hdmi. I bet more informed folks will get back to you on this soon!

Thanks, it's a Gibson ES-137 Custom I had before I went with ES-175's.
Your response was my question, thanks, and that's why I thought some of the A/V guys here might know the best approach.

You want to run coax digital out to your XDA-2, and hope there is a hi- res PCM stereo track to select. Some discs have a multi channel & stereo 24/192 or 96 track as well as a Dolby digital track.

The toslink cable (provided it's a well built one) has more than enough bandwidth. Your problem will be in the device itself, unfortunately most devices limit the optical output to 24/96.

Hi Bill,
Of the two connection methods (HDMI or coax) available on the Sony player, only the coax connection is compatible with the DC-1. On top of that, the Sony player does not support beyond 24/96 stereo LPCM over digital coax according to the manual. You'll need HDMI for that.
You can still play back your Blu-ray audio disc over coax, it will just be down-sampled to 24/96.

And toslink passes 24/192? thanks-0 It depends on the transmitter and hardware. Some TOSLINK devices do not pass more than 24/96 (e.g. most MacBooks). Other high-end sound cards do support 24/192 over TOSLINK. My PCI computer audio card (HT Omega Claro halo) can output 24/192.

I have that same Blu-ray audio disc by PB, and play it w/output via HDMI to my A/V processor. Its sounds magnificent! But admittedly, I haven't checked the audio input stream to verify the resolution being input to my processor - yet. I think you can only get the full resolution via HDMI, but I may be mistaken about that...

So any high quality HDMI to coax toslink or AES convertors?
Crazy to buy new gear for one disc, but if Blu-Ray Pure Audio is a way to enjoy hi res, then there will surely be more.
This one got the 2013 Grammy award for surround sound (which I choose not to have), and a Stereophile disc of the Monyh in October 2012...........

So, if I connect the Blu-Ray to my Panasonic Plasma TV's HDMI input, then connect the TV to the DC-1 DAC via Toslink, what rate do you suppose would get to the DAC? I don't have the disc yet, or I'd just try it and see!
Thanks again,

Bottom line is that HD audio is HDMI only. Any output over any other format would result in the downmixing of the signal. Blurays are designed to be run to a processor with HDMI inputs not a 2ch only DAC with coax/toslink.
Sorry but that is how the powers that be designed it so that you can't make a digital copy of the HD audio original.

What I do is rip videos with DVD Audio Extractor to FLAC files if the DVD or Blu-Ray has HD LPCM. I then play them through normal paths to my DAC.
I just did Rick Wakeman's Six Wives of Henry the VIII this weekend.
There's a bit of a learning curve with DVDAE, but it's worth the effort.

Just needed to get this disclaimer out before we get ourselves in trouble.

Good to see you back, Chuck! Not back, just haven't gone yet. Tomorrow! PS on my other post: You may need something like AnyDVD in front of DVDAE to take out the copy protection. Note: I only do this for stuff I own! Not a pirate ar...ar..
