I recently pulled the trigger on a UMC-200 and currently have an XPA-3 powering my mains. I have a buyer for my old receiver lined up and he is also wanting my XPA-3. Would an XPA-5 have to much power for my surrounds which are Mirage OMD-5's? They are rated up to 175w. I have a large open floor plan in my basement.
Thanks in advance.
Bill

Hi Bill,
I really don't think you will have any problem if you use those speakers with a XPA-5. I'd say go for it.

Hey Bill,
You'll be fine with the XPA-5. I used it for my surrounds before I upgraded to the PA7-350.

If you would loose to much by selling the XPA-3, you could simply add an UPA-200 for $299.

I run a pair of cheap in-ceiling best buy specials for surrounds with my XPR5. No issues for me. You should be fine.

I drive a set of higher efficiency DefTech surrounds with 350w/ch capable amp that seldom puts out more than a couple of watts to listen at comfortable levels. Common use versus maximum capability--are you looking for long term hearing loss?

I would just keep the XPA-3 and add an XPA-2 for great stereo listening. You can level-match them.

I agree with everyone in saying that the XPA-5 would be an excellent choice. I have had one for quite a while and have never had any issues with it causing any damage to any of my speakers. All of them are rated below 200W, some of them are far below that rating. I fall into the camp that believes there is no such thing as too much power. I feel extra power adds dynamics and helps everything sound more relaxed during those times you want to crank the volume. It's a great amp IMO.

Bro, if they die, now you "have to" upgrade

The XPA-5 should be a mandatory purchase here! The foundation of any HT system. Unless of course you purchase an XPR-5, then you would get a pass. It's just that simple and easy!

Thanks for the input guys. I now have an XPA-5 Gen 2 and am really enjoying it. I also REALLY love my new UMC-200. The UMC-200 has cured my upgrade fever. It's that good! Of course the XMC-1 is still more than likely a given, now I feel satisfied enough to wait it out and let Emotiva work out any bugs that are sure to be present.
Thanks,
Bill
