I probably spend more time in my home theater than I should. I love watching movies and sports on my 120" projection. That being said my buddy said I should consider getting an Emotiva amplifier for my system. It looks great and all but I wanted to know if my system/speakers can handle it or if I'd just be throwing away money. Currently I have a 7.2 system with the Mirage Nanosat 5 speaker system. The subs consist of a pair of Polk PSW505's. My receiver is the Onkyo TX-NR809. The satellite speakers are only rated up to 100w I guess from what I can see. I'll post the link to the specs below for people to read. Again, will my setup handle the XPA-5 or should I be investing money in new speakers instead? What size is your room, I'm not sure if you will notice a huge difference with satellite speakers or not, I would say if you can swing some new speakers and the XPA-5, maybe just some towers and a center channel for now and use your Nanosats for the surrounds for now, and as far as new speakers we can't really tell you what you like but can make suggestions of good brands for you to listen to.
Another option is going the way of Emotiva's powered speakers, either the airmotiv 6's or Stealth 8's, everyone here on the forum who has been using these have very positive reviews for them and then of course you would not need the XPA-5.

I can't really afford to upgrade the speakers right now. My home theater is in my basement. Basement is shaped like a L and the 10' screen is against the wall on the short end of the L. So I'd have to say the part of the basement being used for the setup is 12' x 24'. I was only considering making the purchase because Amazon has it on sale and they have 12 months same as cash on it. But if I get more people saying its not worth it on satellites then I will steer clear and save up for new speakers

New speakers will make more of a difference IMHO. You can always get a good deal on a used xpa-5 so I would spend the money on new speakers. Tried getting used speakers if you want to save money.

Lemme pitch a different idea to you and lemme know if I should switch my speakers. I installed satellites in my basement because they hide better. My upstairs TV consists of the following speakers which are older but might be more in line for what I need downstairs. Fronts are Polk RTi70's, center is a Polk CSi40, surrounds are Polk F/Xi30's, and rears are Polk FXiA6's. Bigger and bulkier speakers but I'm guessing would handle the XPA-5 well?

It's worth it if you plan on upgrading later. Big Dan said this will be the last of Emotiva's sales, so if you think you'll want an amp, now is the time to get it. In the mean time, until you can get new speakers, you can run your satelites off the XPA-5. It won't hurt your speakers,(as long as you use common sense) it probably wont help them much either though. If you are planning on keeping your satellite speakers for the long haul I would just stick to your Onkyo reciever.

XPA-5 would pair nicely with those speakers.

I would say switch the speakers from down to up and grab the XPA-5 on sale as it will work well with the Polk speakers and if you ever feel like upgrading you can sell the mirage's and move the Polks back upstairs, that to me would be a great option, especially if you use the system downstairs more so than the upstairs one.

What creimes said!!!! The XPA-5 is on sale!!!!! Grab one at this price while you can. This amp is the work horse of the amp line. It's pedigree is unquestionable. Speakers will come and go , like tires on a car. But a good motor stays and the XPA-5 is a green electric motor. He,,,,,He,,,,,He,,,,,
Peace,
Nick

Chad +1 I had some RTiA7s when I first got my XPA-5 and it really opened them up.

You guys are killing me here. It's going to be quite the chore transferring speakers from upstairs to downstairs. Here's a question. What is the refund policy if I buy the unit from Amazon.com and I don't like it within 30 days? I really wish I could hear the difference before making the big purchase

Almost the same receiver. Onkyo TX-NR805 When I bought an xpa-5, I had an onkyo tx-nr900 with rti 150's, csi 40 and rti 25's for surrounds. The xpa-5 just woke those polks up. More extended highs, cleaner mids, and tighter bass. They also sounded more "open" where the onkyo sounded "thin". I also changed pre-pros at the time (umc-1) so some of the changes I heard could be attributed to it, but I'm sure the XPA-5 played no small part in bringing those polks alive.

After the sale ends, I'm sure you could flip the XPA-5 for just about what you paid for it, if you're not happy with it.
