Will I need a step up transformer if I get a LOMC running to the XSP-1. Currently using an Ortofon 2M blue and liking the sound but am getting the itch to try different cartridges. If I do need a step up transformer, what should I be looking for quality wise.

What the hell is a LOMC. I Googled it and the first entry was " Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center." Thanks but I'm Shinto. Way down the line I see " Low Output Moving Coil Phono Cartridge" but that doesn't seem right because then it would be LOMCPC. Father down the line I see " Lake Oswego Mothers Club." (near Portland, Orygun) OK, one more try down the line, " Laboratoire Ondes et Milieux complexes," heck that's not even in English! IGU (I give up)!

Hey Chukienut, LOMC stands for low output moving coil cartridge and they are .02 to just below 1.0. Hey lmr If your out put is too low with a .03 to .04 cartridge and you don't have a good phono pre-amp that can boost the output properly without distortion, you will need the output boosted through the step-up transformer and then run this into the phono pre-amp. Not sure how good the XSP-1 phono pre-amp section is. I'm using a Musical Surroundings Nova and can boost my output to +60db and still be very quiet. Denon use to make very good step-up transformers. The following are pretty good, Ear MC4,Ortofon Verto, Icon Audio MCTX and Bellari Mt-502. Good luck.

I haven't moved on the new cartridge yet as I am fooling around with room treatment.
