I've replaced the old fuse box with a new breaker panel, for my apartment. (as part of this, I'm also installing two dedicated 15 amp/split line outlets for my media center).
I understand there are super surge protectors that you can connect to the breaker panel to protect the whole house. Does anyone have any experience with this? With all the electronics we have today, it seems more efficient and cost effective; if they really give the same protection as dedicated units. Indeed, why couldn't I just connect three MOVs across a spare 220v breaker and ground?

I have read good things about Environmental Potentials EP-2050 Whole House Surge Protector. I'm looking to install one in a new home in the spring. Kind of pricey; however it seems worth it considering it protects everything.

I have seen systems like this from Square D which is now Schneider Electric. You might see if they have anything on their website.

I know this is an older thread - but I wanted to say I bought that same one about 6 months ago. I think I bought the Ultra version. I did a lot of research looking at various models - and I believe the Eaton is among the better ones. No complaints . Gives me a little more peace of mind.
