My little one has asked for a set of Dr Dre's Beats solo headphones for her birthday.. We did go and audition them and I thought they were horrible but she was dancing in the aisle.. Is it me ? I also
listened to Sennheiser and Bose and thought they were very nice but I couldn't even get her to listen to them..She took one look and shook her head no, never missing a dance move.. ... I want
to make her happy and Im aware of the hip factor with the Beats.. Im just having a hard time giving up SQ for hipness. Im willing to upgrade to the Studio's if necessary...
Im thinking that the set I listened to were broken. Theres no way they could get the rave reviews sounding like that.. Anyone here have them and what do you think of them ? What would be a
viable alternative for a 13 year old.??
On another note...And I know its going to sound cliché.. But..... This morning I put her favorite cd on the new player ...CD-1...When it was done she asked me to play it again.. Normal mornings
I'll stream or play a cd on my other player and her door will be closed .. Not this morning ( I set up CD-1 last night ) She wasn't even aware there was new gear.. I asked her if she like the sound. She
told me " Its like being AT the concert " This is the same little girl who liked the Beats so I think im up against the fatal hip , terminal coolness of a teenager.. Any suggestions ?

As far as "stylish" headphones go that cost similar to Beats but sound better (IMHO) I'd look at Bowers & Wilkins P Series of cans or B&O's new enclosed headphones (which I believe are variants of AKG). I use B&W P7, P5s myself. They may not be as garish as Beats in terms of loud colors though the B&Os I think can now be had in orange etc. but in terms of SQ they're both up there. JBL makes some new, Beats-like cans too that might be worth a listen.

Normally I recommend V-Moda headphones as that's what I use. For a teenager I'd recommend looking at the custom V-Modas. They can be had in different colors, custom logos, custom names etc. and what could be more fun than customizing them for a teenager? That the SQ is superb is a bonus! 60-day trial and a 2-year warranty. If you break them (a distinct possibility for a teenager!) they'll give you 50% off a new set. Click pic to check them out!

Be a hero, buy her the Beats and be done with it.
The beats are colored and bass boosted. Unless they are a financial burden just get them.

BUT HE HAD TO HAVE THEM CAUSE ALL THE COOL KIDS DO.. I'M A SOFTY THOUGH AND I REMEMBER THOSE DAYS SO I GOT THEM FOR HIM..BUT I WAITED TILL BEST BUY HAD A FLASH SALE FOR 99.99 ONE MORNING! IT WAS WORTH SEEING HIM SMILE ON CHRISTMAS MORNING..ILL WORK ON HIS "FOLLOWING THE LEMMINGS OVER THE CLIFF" ISSUES WHEN HE'S A LITTLE OLDER!

Most brookstones carry them now so you can get hands on. I would have purchased some but they were out of stock with the custom hot pink sides.

Been there. I bought my daughter a pair of Grado cans, the cheap ones, but man they sound nice. She enjoyed using them, then she saw the Vmoda's I got for cheap on Amazon. She offered to trade based on the extra Vmoda bass and how cool they looked. I traded and got the better end of the deal with sound and she was absolutely happy with the sound and styling of her new phones. Get your girl those lousy Beats because you love her and she is a kid. Make sure she listens to your better headphones whenever you can, and she will have every opportunity to catch the bug.

With kids it is all about fitting in. Even if your daughter did realize the Beats sound trashier than Miley Cyrus she would still be reluctant to get something else mainly due to peer pressure. Beats has done a great marketing job, just like Bose and Monster have. Among the majority of people, you're doing all right if you have any or all of these brands.

Get her what she wants. It's her present not yours. When you buy equipment you get what you want. Remember she's young most of the younger generation don't really care about the sound quality, it's more about the bragging rights. So I say get her what she wants if she's dancing in the aisle you should be too.

I stick with my suggestion. Get the V-Modas. Maybe you can customize the Beats logo on them with her name... (assuming that's legal).

Beats are the in thing right now. You can get much better quality and sound much cheaper, but its not Beats. No matter what you do, unless its beats it will not add up.

What a beautiful girl you have!... I almost have made the same comment many a time, but thought I might be considered an old pre-vert. We already know that Chuckienut is, so I'll chime in and say that you'll have a tough time keeping the little boys from lining up around the block to take HER out! If she's half as smart as she is pretty, (and considering her kin, I'm sure she is) then she is an exceptional young woman. Congratulations to both of you & Happy Birthday Christina!

I think you should get her a pair of XPR-1 and call it a day. Happy birthday Christina!

This thread is cracking me up!!! Bub, first of all, I want to say Happy Birthday to your little girl. IMO, I think that as long as the Beats aren't going to be a financial burden for you, then just go ahead and get them for her. I remember when I was a teen, and "being cool" actually mattered to me. Sometimes as a teen, getting a certain product has nothing at all to do with the functionality. it's simply all about getting something that "establishes you as a cool kid". Heck, I remember wanting a lot of things as a kid. None of which had any "real value" as being a useful tool. Instead, they had UNLIMITED value as a fun toy, at least to me they did. Beats have established themselves as the "must have" brand (along with the Apple ipod) for the younger generation. Hey that's ok with me, we had the Nintendo Game Boy when I was a kid.

What I would do:
I would research a set of cans that I thought would me ether needs for colones while being good cans- I think the V-Moda M-100 are good cans, the LP2 might be a little cheaper without much of a step down in SQ - but you would notice it.
I would find a set for sale somewhere.
Now that she has noticed the differences in potential SQ. while at home, away from the MUST HAVE NOW mentality.Explain to her that you will buy her whichever ones she chooses with one caveat. She must make a list of qualities. - look, fit, coolness, trendiness, SQ, features, and price.
You two can make a simple chart with your columns.
As she listens to each one, voice your feelings along with hers and let her fill in the chart as she deems fit. Then let her decide, knowing full well that the trendiness of beats may trump every other sane consideration.
When she picks, if she chooses poorly, I would say okay, I think those sound terrible compared to these, but you get what you want. I am proud of you for going through the process and making an educated decision.
You might explain that being a slave to fashion and following the herd mentality can have negative impact on you, and that the coolest people are the trendsetters and not the followers. I expect that would be an excercise in futility, but might make you feel better about buying her junk.
Best case, your daughter explains to her friends. Look the beats are cool, but MY DAD is an audiophile. His system at home is like being AT the concert. He knows more about stereo than anybody. He got me these, which sound SO much better than those. These are professional DJ cans. Yours are cute and all, but whatever...
I know, probably not. My kid is going on eight. He still thinks I am cool.
