Christina's 13th birthday..

Just went through the same thing with my son. Bought him the beats and saved myself a headache!

My son Thomas wanted a bass. Cool! He wanted a left handed bass. Bummer. He throws left handed, but does everything else right handed. I have left handed guitar and bass playing friends, and they are SOL if they do not have their own instrument with them. So I got him a nice Jaguar bass. It rocks! Because I did not get him a left handed one, he did not touch it for a year. Now he enjoys it, but I keep shut up about the left handed thing. I am still not sure if it was worth it, buying him a right handed bass to learn and play on. It certainly will make his life easier if he sticks with it, but it cost him a year of playing. But with the phones, if I had the scratch, I would get the Beats. But I would never borrow them!!!!

Happy birthday Christina!
bub, you're stuck, it's a no-win situation if you don't get the Beats.

I'm lucky, my son (11 1/2) asked me last week how Beats could be worth $200, I told him they weren't. But then again, he never listens to music with headphones or earphones, he uses those only when he's on the PC.  I'm still surprised we didn't get into a long "prove it to me" discussion, like we do about everything else.

I'd go Beats but keep drawing her into high fidelity...the Beats will make her happy now and that's a key part of being a Dad of a little girl. Being special enough to be hip to her needs w/o forcing ours on them...too much... My girl is 12, so we are in similar situations.

And, she is a cutie. I imagine that, like me, you are starting to worry about dates and boys and all that drama. No mater what we teach them, I don't think I can not worry! Anyway, Happy Birthday to her from me!

Thank you everyone.. After reading all the posts I've decided to acquiesce to Christina's wishes.. She has decided on the solo..She didn't like the studio..Too big..Too heavy..Told me it was for mixing..At that point I knew she had done her research and was resolute.. So be it.. But like so many areas of my life I'm prone to excess..( 5 amps in the last 6 months...12 registrations.. At least in Fl. They all come on your birthday. So it's just one check. ) I have decided to at look V- Moda as an upgrade for her and B&W for myself at home.. The solo ( in pink ..eat your heart out pop ) and Sony MDRV6 are already ordered...

She really is a sweet kid and most times will defer to my suggestions..Not this time. She would look at me with exasperation ..It was a battle better left unfought..For today..

I do have a question.. And here's where I continue to show my ignorance.. Christina has an iphone 5s , iPad , and Mac Pro..that she uses to access iTunes and some obscure Internet station..I think the Dac's on all three are not very good.. So where do I go from here ?

You could get ipod docks with maybe a headphone out. But I doubt she would bother with all that when she can plug in the iphone to her headphone anywhere she wants and text at the same time.
Now the Mac(book) pro you can buy her a DAC like the DC-1 which will have a decent headphone amp. But if she moves that laptop around I think it will get nearly zero use.
I don't know if you realized this ....despite the beats being rather poor quality, it's a huge step up from what was popular and available a decade or two ago. So....you HAVE started her on her journey. Now just wait, let her get used to the nice sound. (It is honestly nice for most people). Then when she is a bit older and maybe start to care about audio things, buy her some audio gear.

You could look at something like the Audioengine D1 below for an outboard DAC and headphone amp. It beats the built-in stuff on laptops. This particular unit is small so very portable and looks "cool".

Thanks guys... All three look like they would work great..The problem with the dc-1 ( garbulky )there's no doubt in my mind that I would appropriate it .. Back to square

one..Audioengine D1 ( hamster ) vs. Dragonfly V 1.2..( Boom ).. Comes down to dac's , functionality and Christina..I haven't discussed this with her..And probably won't..

While we are talking dac's.. And this is for anyone.. I hooked up the cd-1 with RCA cables into the Onkyo 818 that I'm using as a pre-pro...I think I'm using the dac in the

Actually I don't know how well the USB output would work with the iphone. Using the camera connection kit only works with specific DAC's - usually ones that require very little power. The dragonfly may indeed work..I just don't know if it would. Some have reported it would work with a powered hub. Maybe B'zilla can try it with his ipad to see if he is sucessful?

My suggestion is to get the HRT microstreamer

It's designed to work with the iphones and ipads. It has a headphone output and volume control on it. It's about the same size (slightly larger) than the iphone.

For iphones and idevices it needs the apple camera connection kit or the HRT MMA=1 adapter. And the firmware needs to be at least 1.2 and higher on the HRT. I think.
