...Which brings up a question about moving... I'm currently running an (excellent) pair of GoldenEar Triton 3+ tower speakers with built-in, self-powered subwoofers. I still have the factory boxes for these speakers. That said, the speakers ARE large and heavy tower speakers, and if I've got to transport them halfway across the country, I'm wondering if I should just sell them now and then replace them when we get to our new digs? I could sell them at a break-even price and replace them with a less expensive, but equal quality satellite/subwoofer system later on. Just in case someone wants to know what I'd consider "equal," my two choices for satellites would be either the Klipsch RP-600m II or the KEF LS50 Meta. Subs are a dime a dozen on the used market. I'd be keeping my DAC/preamp (Emotiva Stealth DC) and my mono power amps (Emotiva PA-1 pair). These items are small and lightweight. Your thoughts? Thanks - Boomzilla I would sell the Tritons and buy one of the other ones you consider "equal" (and add a sub, obviously). Moving large, heavy speakers runs the risk of damaging them. Just my 2c

Just my 2c Thanks, hemster - I hadn't even considered the possibilities of damage. I do have the original boxes, but moving employees are notoriously rough when handling heavy items. We're trying not to move ANY furniture - only tools & personal items like clothing. We can replace everything else when we get where we're going. In fact, if we can get down to a single U-Haul, we may just eliminate the moving company and move ourselves. One moving van with a car in tow would be just fine... OTOH, we haven't actually moved since the early 1980s, and how much stuff we can divest is yet to be determined.

Looks like we’ll be moving here as well in the near future. Our house goes on the market next month. I’ve got boxes for all my stereo equipment but not for my speakers. I’ll have the movers move the less important stuff and the fragile stuff I’ll move in our SUV. I’ll probably ship my Audi. If I can’t get everything in the SUV I’ll just fly back and rent a Suburban or similar for the rest. We’re moving from Kali to San Antonio area, about 1,320 miles so not terrible. I could rent a U-Haul but I’d prefer a bit more comfort for an 18 hour drive. 😎

Used market subs are probably WORTH about a dime a dozen. Some are not really subs, while the few YOU would be interested in would be $$$ and if well kept, worth it.
As for speakers? Any way to box 'em THAN strap to pallet for ship. Cover in plastic so if somebody spills their coffee on 'em you'll be OK.....
Dependng on just what kind of car / truck / van or whatever you are driving, you COULD rent a small enclosed trailer and move all the 'fragile' stuff yourself...Which for ME would include most of the stereo, any special China or fragile antiques.......That sort of thing.
Any idea of the NEW listening space? Larger or smaller than now? Better shape?
Make sure the new neighbors THINK you are deaf so they won't complain about loud music or movies. Great strategy I used decades ago in my apartment days, As Long as I didn't get too loud after 8pm or maybe 9pm on weekends, I was OK....... NOBODY ever thought to question a deaf audiophile......Never did figure that one out....

Depending on the room I end up in, I may not want or need 20 Hz. And at the very modest volumes that I play music, subs won't be moving too much air and should have relatively low distortion (for subs). I've owned everything from top of the line subs to lowly Klipsch ones. The way I play them - not too much diff. If we want to move enough stuff to justify a U-Haul truck rental, then yeah, I'd throw my speakers in. But if we can pare stuff down enough to move in our mini-van, then the speakers will need to get sold & replaced. Any idea of the NEW listening space? Larger or smaller than now? Better shape? None whatsoever. In fact, we'll probably rent for a year or two before deciding if we can stand New England winters. Yes? Then we'll look around for something to buy. No? We'll become snowbirds - New England in the Summer, the South in the Winter. Again - at the levels I listen, it won't be an issue.

And since you are going to drive anyway.......try to pare the fragile stuff down to ONE load in your vehicle of choice..... I mean......a 1300 mile drive is 2 nights......Than add in the plane ticket BACK. Fuel cost? Even at 20mpg? That's 65 gallons and I'd guess maybe 4$ per gallon......Add in food / restaurants....... That's about 450 miles per day....and leaves you an hour at the motel for some POOL TIME to relax....... 18 hours (your call) for 1400 miles? Call it 77mph....Plus an hour for lunch? Sorry. You'll hammer that big SUV you want to rent down to some horrible low MPG...... BTW. Where I live now is not my first choice, either. I'd move somewhere else and have a list of exclusion states......Like virtually the entire Eastern Seaboard and anything north enough to get a lot of snow. Places in Idaho are OK.....but you need to live in what the locals call 'The Banana Belt'......

Always an important consideration.
My parents once moved to Sacremento.....But Rented. They bought land up the hill in a small gold rush town and built......
Only special feature of the new house was a very large garage suitable for maybe 4 or 6 cars AND a good sized workbench near windows. The woodburning stove provided plenty of warmth even in winter......
House built? Basic 1200 square feet but full basement. I worked up there for a couple weeks and drove plenty of nails..... Did ceiling blocking, paint and built stairs. that sort of thing...

You must still be considerate of your neighbors. Except the ones with the dam DOG that barks all day... Than? All bets are OFF....

I draw the line at Barking Dogs......which never let up.
I'll 'ignore' some one-off stuff like a party that goes on too long / too loud.
But had trouble with a neighbor BURNING BRUSH in their back yard. Stink? Smoke?

I live in Suburbia. Your basic 1/3 to 1/4 acre lot........Set aside (minimum distance from house to property line) is I think 10 feet, but frequently more due to 'shape' of lots.....which are not perfectly rectangular....
My ma had 7+ acres in Idaho.......off a main highway and you could make all the noise you wished. My brother lived UP the hill away from everybody and HE could do limitied target practice on the 'back 40'.....
But I'm a suburban rat. I have one good deal going. My back yard is a large SLOPE and those neighbors are 100feet away and UP. So I only have side neighbors to concern myself with. Both are reaonable
people and NOT party-types.
And in the case of brush burning? That's where I generally draw the line. Or even the idiot who buries MOTOR OIL in a pit in his back yard. A total fool.....

I’m currently on about 3/4 acre, but it’s still urban.

That is a generous amount of land......3/4 acre as a square is maybe 180 feet on a side. Depending exactly where? You could have a nice dense tree line on 3 sides of the house...... Urban? 3/4 acre in LA or Miami or Chicago would be a lot of $$$. 3/4 acre up the hill from me in Rancho Santa Fe is a couple million .... even unimproved. 7000 square feet on just over 2 Acres? Starts about 6.8 Million$$$ I'm moving THERE right after I win the Lottery.... www.homes.com/property/5921-via-de-la-cumbre-rancho-santa-fe-ca/t8p8p73l6e2k7/

My house is a five-bedroom, 2.5 bath, two-story of about 3,600 square feet. We bought it in the mid 1980's in "as is" condition from a couple who had already moved to Florida for retirement.for $162,000, cash. We own it outright with no mortgage. In the local real estate market, it's probably worth $370,000. You don't get California prices in Louisiana...
The only way to improve the selling price is to be ready to move on short notice, and then wait until New Orleans floods again (it will within the next five years, I believe). The last time New Orleans flooded after Hurricane Katrina, I was getting calls from realtors telling me I could sell for any price I wanted if I could be out in two days. Seems somewhat ghoulish, but... I'm thinking that we could get $500 to $600 thousand easily.
But barring a hurricane sale, wherever we move to in New England, we will be able to buy less than half the house for about three times the money. I'm not happy about that, but it will be near the grandchildren, it won't be prone to hurricanes, and it won't be 105 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade as it's going to be here today.
Oh well...
