I live N. County SD where 'acres' are either very $$$ or move elsewhere. Around here? Maybe 4 homes per acre.....Call 'em 10,000 square foot lots with room for infrastructure factored in. If I were wealthy? Maybe up in Fallbrook? Or inland a little further......
The 'park' across the street is on 400 acres and features an upper AND lower lake. Lower is about 3/4mile around while the upper is difficult to get to except at ONE tiny point.......and is much smaller.
Only ONCE have I seen something I didn't expect. I saw a very short animal with a long tail and a black ring or tip at the end disappear into the brush. I think it was a Ferret....an illegal animal here in California..... It MAY have been an escaped pet, in which case I give it short odds of lasting 6 months. Nothing else I know about 'fit' what I saw.

As usual, I'm late to the party. Just saw a video of the capture of a 12 foot PYTHON in Houma LA.......
So while I thought 10 years for sure? More like 10 minutes.
Sorry, Boom......another nasty to worry about......especially IF you have outdoor pets...

Quick update...I'd not heard the coyotes much lately, but this morning I heard them very close to the house. It sounded like they were in the woods next door with a couple hundred feet. By the sounds of it, they were attacking another animal...sounded like a dog wailing. Very different than coyotes! The cats are not going outside today! Also - leonski - we hit the jackpot on our land. We paid $49,500 for it (in ~1997) and got just over 6 acres. 1 year later, the same parcel would cost ~$100K! We're rural, but it only takes us ~30 minutes to be in downtown Cincinnati and 20-30 minutes to be in many key parts of town. My son lives in San Diego, and the pricing there is crazy! Luckily, he gets a housing allowance from the Navy that's quite generous. Mark

I live in a small coastal town in Florida. In the last few years I've seen coyotes in our area and we are not country. They seem to have adapted very well to small town life.

So far this month, I've undertaken the (monumental) chore of culling my music library. What I've discovered:
Back in the day, my daughter (and, apparently, her friends) used my library as the repository of their pirated tracks. I've been culling those wholesale.
An audio amigo who labors under the misconception that he can resample a CD to a zillion samples per second and a zillion bit depths and come out with "better" sound has given me multiple discs of his work. I've found that in almost every case, my ears are telling me "no difference." So, I've been decimating that lot as well.
Over time, I've accumulated the same classical piece (Beethoven's sixth symphony, for example) by a half-dozen different orchestras led by a dozen or more different conductors. I've been keeping only my favorites, unless there's no particular favorite - in which case I keep the best recorded performance.
Since the majority of "my" discs came from garage sales, I'm finding that many of the artists I don't care for at all, and from many of the discs I'm finding only one or two tracks worth keeping.
The most vexing discs in the library are compilations ("Dance Music, 2000" or "Hits of the '80s" etc.). These frequently create duplicates of songs I already have in discs by the original artists. Another problem is that recording quality can be spotty ("Ronco - made for TV") on one end to "Rhino" on the other.
This has taken DAYS to go through (and I STILL have an equal amount of time yet to go). But my original library was about 7Tb, and now I'm down to about 4Tb without loss of anything that I'll ever care to hear again. But as a byproduct of this sort, I've encountered a LOT of "new" music I didn't even know I had and that is absolutely excellent!
When I (finally) reach the end of this sorting, I may post a list of surprise music that fell out of the library and (pleasantly) surprised me? Let me know if you'd care to see the list?

Go for it. Maybe I'll find something new too.

I would bet you’ll find something new! I’ve enjoyed exploring music my whole life, and stumbled into a LOT of surprises. I’ll try to find them on YouTube so you can hear them without having to scrounge for them, but some may be REALLY obscure…
I also intend finishing the pruning of my library before I go diving back in to find the jewels, so another two or three weeks (at least). When the time comes for the “big revelation,” should I post in this thread, in the “currently listening” thread, or start a fresh thread?
Cheers!

I wouldn't be surpised if a visit to the local pre-owned CD store would have a few surpises, as well. I'm certain that in your gigantic collection you've got some real excellent tunes......

They surprised the heck out of ME, for sure - and had I not gone through, listening to (at least) samples of every cut, I would never have discovered them at all!

I would most definitely like to view the list sir. LOL - novisnick and I often have “schizophrenic overlap” in our musical tastes. While Nick appreciates my quirky side (“One Night in Rio” for example) he rolls his eyes at my “electronica pop dance” predilections (“All around the world,” for example).

Only in Retirement can anyone take the kind of time required to cull such an immense list......And with a small sample of each tune? Get up early, make a pot of 90proof Coffee and get to it. Take an hour break for The Price Is Right than back to it. An hour lunch maybe 2 or 3 hours later....in silence, out on the back patio than another 2 or 3 hours....... This is starting to sound like a project..... Do either you OR novisnik like Weird Al?

Yes - This IS a project. Yes - I AM retired (otherwise this WOULD be impossible). And, although incredibly tedious, I am finding it productive and rewarding.
I'm encountering great music I like that I'd forgotten that I had and meeting new music that I quite like.
That said, I feel that I've been burning my candle at all five ends (or 21 ends, depending on how you count) for the past month.

Laurindo Almeida was a member of the L.A. Four for its entire run of maybe 8 years.
They recorded for East Wind and Concord Jazz. Concord is still going but I don't know what happened to East Wind......
Both are 'high end' labels.....

Not yet - but I haven’t gotten to the “H”s yet…
I am also going to need to take more recovery time from music editing - my carpal-tunnel is getting riled up from so much time on the keyboard.

I think I'd be OK but after a couple days, I'm sure to have a brain cell explode.

No problem for me - I got dain bramage to start with! LOL Yeah - the carpal tunnel pain (and, for me, elbow, shoulder, and neck pain too) calm themselves down after a couple of days' rest. But to my knowledge, there are no voice-controlled directory editing tools for Mac...
