I have an Onkyo TX-NR818 that I am using for Zones 2&3 in my house. I have a Rotel amp that I want to power the 2nd zone with, however, the Onkyo will not control the volume of the power amp in this mode. Will a passive pre-amp linked between the amp and receiver take care of this problem? If this makes any difference, or if there are other options, I have a USP-1 and 2 UPA-1s that I use for my 2.1 channel setup. Can the USP-1 be used by chance to perform double duty for the 2nd zone volume control? ? Thanks for any help.

I believe with a y cable splitter the USP-1 should have plenty of pre-amp power to drive the second zone from whereever your 2.1 output is. However....depending on how it's setup, you may not get the bass because the y splitter would take only the 2.0 and not the 0.1 subwoofer signal. A passive pre-amp should work for your scond zone output. But most likely you would have to manually adjust volume as most passive's that are affordable do not have a remote.

You should be able to use a passive pre-amp between the pre-outs and amp.

Do you have the necessary inputs for TRS/balanced connections for that attenuator?

The Rotel amp has balanced connections, I'll just have to get some bal. cables, or find one that doesn't require bal cables.

You can get RCA to XLR cables. If you end up going with a different amp, the Mini-X is designed for just such a situation.

Ok, I guess I'm confused as well. I thought those were balanced and rca connections. Guess I need to cancel the SM?
Back to the drawing board.

So TRS is the same as Balanced?
Think I could order a 3.5mm to RCA cable, however, all the cables I am seeing are single-ended 3.5mm with a double-ended RCA end? So do I order 2 of them and just use the one end of the RCA on each cable?

I just found an adapter that I think I could use: 3.5mm to RCA female So I could get two of those and use the current RCA I have to connect it to the receiver.......

I don't think this is what you want. Wait a month or two. Emotiva is close to releasing their passive pre-amp called the control freak.

Just allow for the extra space. Actually you can use male balanced cables in, you just need adapters going out.

I think there is another TC level user on this forum and he likes it.
