Just for fun -
We haggle about Class A vs AB, .00000000001% distortion, and room treatment.
But how many have their ears cleaned professionally or using one of the drugstore solutions?
Just sayin' !

Yeah, I know. I've done it all my life, though, and have never had an ear infection (not one - ever). I've not ever touched my eardrums. I've not ever had significant wax build up. For the majority of my life, I've had an annual audiogram showing my hearing is better than most.
If I ever have a problem, I'll change my ways, but I think that the article is excessively conservative. If you believe it, then follow the advice. I'll continue cleaning my ears with Q-tips daily, thanks.
Or - phrased another way - A lifetime of experience vs. something I read on the internet. I actually DID ask a Certified Occupational Health Nurse about the practice once, and she said that so long as you aren't rambunctious with the Q-tips, there's no harm at all.

Not just the poking of the ear drum but for us it is the inevitable pushing of wax that eventually builds up a wall of it at the ear drum thus changing its frequency response. Think about it. Unless you are scraping the ear drum with your q-tip you are pushing some small amount of wax closer to the ear drum each time you do it. There isn't really a way around that.

An otolaryngologist once told me not to put anything in your ear that's smaller than your elbow.

I have to clean them regularly because they seem to generate an overabundance of wax. If I go too long between cleanings, one or the other will actually "plug up" until I can wash them out again. I have had them professionally cleaned by a doctor 3-4 times, but now just use warm water and a bulb syringe, since that's basically the process that he used. It's amazing what washes out of there!!
I used to use Q-Tips and found that with the amount of wax build-up I get, they were mostly pushing the wax against the eardrums, as suggested above. Washing works best for me!
Cheers!
Chuck

I voted no as I never have had this done, and I think I may need to as if I get a cold or especially a sinus cold there's times I can't hear anything and can actually feel the wax moving in my ear, so I should be getting this done I guess.

I use the shower stream regularly and have it done professionnally when it's not enough... and it does make a massive difference to my hearing!

So does the response "regularly" include use of Q-Tips daily? Or is that just for having the doctor clean it or buying one of those ear cleaning kits from the store?

I use a microfiber cloth wrapped around the end of a jack hammer, twice a day, as I find it really gets down in there. Q-Tips are for the non-committed. Before I used the jackhammer method, I would pour straight degreaser into my skull, but I felt that wasn't good enough for these audiophile ears.

I clean my ears regularly using warm water. I've only had my ears professionally scraped once. So, being that I don't have them cleaned "professionally" I answered no.
The one time that I had it done it sounded like rubbing my finger across the needle of a record player... only inside my head.
