Hi gang, I have been enjoying my ERC-3 for months and usually at reasonably loud playing levels. After a few nights of quieter listening I have noticed a lot of motor noise when any disc is playing. I also have an ERC-2 with the obvious different loading mechanism and there is little to no motor noise while playing. Is this inherent to the new model or is my ERC-3 just loud?

That's interesting that your -2 was quiet. My -2 was loud like you describe your -3 to be, but my -1 is quiet.

Last night I put in a CD and the motor sounded louder. Tonight I put in a different CD and the motor was very quiet. So on my ERC-3 it depends on the CD.

gday guys, sorry for not replying earlier regarding the noisy erc-3 motor. have family commit ments to attend. straight up i have over 500 hrs on my erc-3 with no noisy motor. i admit i can hear slight motor noise standing next to the erc-3 but sitting 12 ft away i cant hear the motor. no i'm not affilitated with emotiva or a chronic fanboy, just a regular guy from australia who enjoys all things audio as well as other hobbies. voice your concerns with emotiva. after all its the highly qualified engineers & designers who created the erc-1 & erc-2 players which is held to worldwide acclaim. and possibly reading yours & other erc-1 & erc-2 reviews around the world which influenced me to purchase my erc-3 which gives me so much enjoyment. please help emotiva with any erc-3 problems as they will help you in turn & into future regarding further cd models such as a possible erc-4 model release. cheers chris  |

I've heard noise in all three of the players, ERC -1,2,&3 but I'm sitting four feet away.
Once the music is on it isn't noticeable ,

I hear the slot loaders as they feed and eject a CD, otherwise not a sound except for the music.

I had an ERC-2 for a couple of months. All I ever heard was a soft whirring that I had to be very close to hear and only when a disc was first put in did it do that.
Sounds like a call to Emotiva is in order.

My ERC-2 and my newer ERC-3 both make motor noise. I have concluded after testing about 30 different CD's that: 1)It will make more motor noise within the beginning 3 tracks of a CD then sort of drop off gradually through the CD. 2)CD's that have label pressings....The thicker and heavier the top label pressing the louder the motor noise I experience.
I have placed some CD's in the drive that contain no label except for the pressed artist name and album title and those CD's tend to make absolutely no motor noise.
That being said.....All of my CD's are original pressings (no CDR's an no no-name budget productions).
One artist I listen to a lot with over 14 CD's from him is Mark Kozelek. His earlier work is on the 4AD label and those CD's make motor noise. His later work under his name and the Sun Kil Moon moniker is on Caldo Verde label....They make no noise at all.
My conclusion: I need to work on my obsessive compulsive disorder....That is what my wife tells me anyway.

Interesting observations, much of what I listen to are my own compilations on Taiyo Yuden CD-R's with only black sharpie writing to identify, so maybe that's why hear little to no noise in my ERC-1 & ERC-2. |

This may sound foolish, but has anyone who has noise on some discs and not on others checked to see if there may be a difference in balance on those discs? I would make sense at the speeds they are turning that if they were lopsided they would make more noise than others. Plus, and I could be entirely wrong, I thought CD players were variable speed in that they spun faster on the tracks closer to the center and slower on the tracks further out toward the edge.

Which would be where you'd notice more noise if any. this is great feedback guys. various disc pressings & the way they are made would certainly go a long way to explain some of the erc-3 motor noise thats been occuring amongst the owners. i have no cd'rs just factory pressings & darn i wish i could be of more help to you guys but my erc-3 continues to have only slight motor noise standing right next to it. i have a variety of cd's, hdcd, hybrid sacd;s & the erc-3's motor noise consistently sounds the same being very slight standing next to it. have just past the 600 hr playing mark with no probs. keep observing guys & see if you can find ongoing consistent motor noise & note the discs you use when it happens such as some of you have carefully observed & noted. try to enjoy the music in the meantime, cheers chris |

Yes, i spoke with a tech earlier this week.
He said something about the reader, put it this way, It's CDs that i'm using he says.
But I beg to to differ, I've had had all of the Emo Cd players, and they had the same problem. When the same CDs are used in other players, no noise
I'll probably end up selling it soon...
