Just curious about wattage output when only 2 channels are driven vs. 5? I'm going to be using this XPA-5 for my mains only til I get a new pre-pro.

i believe your amp is rated at 200 watts per channel @ 8 ohms no matter how many channels are being used. (unless the amp is bi-amped which i dont think it is.)

There should be a modest bump, but nothing you will hear. I know that with the XPR-5 there is a bump,,,,I think ( if I remember correctly,, I did call and ask that specific question a few weeks ago ) it bumps to 500 watts for two channel.
It sure won't hurt anything!

It sure won't hurt anything! The XPR-5's rating with 2 channels driven is on the product page and yes it's 500 watts. Even though XPA-2's 300 watt seems to have a more powerful low end. The XPA-5 used to have the various ratings too but they took it off. I think it's 250 WPC 2 ch driven.

From the notes I kept for my XPA-5
8 ohm rating RMS: 5 channels - 8 ohm = 200 watts per channel 4 channels - 8 ohm = 230 watts per channel 3 channels - 8 ohm = 250 watts per channel 2 channels - 8 ohm = 275 watts per channel 1 channel - 8 ohm = 300 watts per channel
The 275 watts / 2 channels is why I don't believe there is much difference between the XPA-5 I have now and the XPA-2 (300 watts / 2 channels) that it replaced.
Cheers Gary

ok. I read a review of the XPA-5 and the reviewer was driving his 0PP0 in stereo. Claime 275 watts for 2 channels. I have no idea. Just assumed it would be more than 200 watts.

More watts available if needed but highly unlikely you will notice, my XPA-5 pounds using 2 channels or using all 5 channels Chad

Looks like that version had a 1600VA transformer vs the 1200VA now. They must have had a running change...the 4 ohm ratings are higher too than the current version or the version of the gen1 XPA-5 that I had. So it's prolly closer to 250W and I agree it makes little difference...it's got plenty of juice for most.

Yep, a quick search reveals...... I had mentioned before that the transformer spec had to be wrong. They did the same thing way back with the xpa-5 which was listed as a 1600va transformer but was really a 1200va. Yes, that indeed was the case. I actually called Emotiva regarding that as was told it was a misprint on the web site. Cheers Gary

Ask and I shall receive! Thanks for the info. Nice to have this forum for a resource. I'm sure my Focals will be bathed in glory with the power from this amp!
Unfortunately my Marantz NR1603 only has pre-outs for the L/R mains. So, until I make a change there, I will have 3 channels in waiting.
UPA-200 is gone and making room for XPA-5. One more step in the right direction.

The XPA-5 has nestled nicely into it's new home. Never thought a pair of Focal Chorus speakers could sound sooo goood. They seem to like 275 watts of muscle! My subwoofer seems to be benefiting from the new member as well. It has sonically disappeared from it's location and has never sounded stronger and so invisible.
To anyone with doubts about purchasing this amp.....erase them! You will be happy you did.
