Hi everybody
I'm living in France where EMOTIVA is not well known. So I guess you will help me.
I'm looking for an amp to support my Yamaha RX-A2020. I've got two choice: either a second hand UPA-7 or a brand new UPA-700.
What do you think about these two amps ? Excepted the difference of power!
Regards

The UPA-7 is more similar to the build quality and power of the XPA-200 and XPA-100 than to the UPA-200,500, and 700. I say go with the UPA-7 as long as it's under warranty. It's definitely a more powerful amp. If it's not under warranty....well you may want to consider that choice a bit more carefully as you are in france. The UPA-7 also uses no fans. The UPA-700 has a fan (which by most reports rarely if ever activates). One difference you may not know about is that the UPA-7 uses 32 db gain and the UPA-700 uses 29db gain. I don't think you'll be dissapointed with either purchase to be honest.

I love my UPA-500! Runs cool, fans have yet to come on. Replaces an Anthem PVA 7.

"The matter with the second hand UPA7: no invoice, so no warranty.... hum, hum !!!!"
This is not a problem, it is an opportunity! Use those facts to your advantage when negotiating the price. The fact of the matter is that power amps are generally very sturdy devices. It is rare for one to fail. And the failure modes usually occur early on. So if that amp is working well now, chances are it'll work well for the next decade or so. See if you can get the price down low enough so that you'd be able to get it repaired and still have a good deal.
Also, the UPA-7 amps were very well-built and nicely designed pieces. Snagging one of those for a good price is a real coup...

It's $2000! It's a switching amplifier (not a torroidal design). And it uses a propriety PWM design. And at 2k it offers RCA jacks only. It's wording is also a little tricky. I'm not sure if it is all channels driven rating or not. Not what I would go for. for 2K, get yourself a sherbourn PA 7-350 on the used market. That's the equivalent of an XPR-7. Sherbourn was an Emotiva company and has a transferrable warranty. And it's a hell of an amp. For new prices you can look at outlaw audio. They have similar prices on beefy seven channel amps. www.outlawaudio.com/products/index.html

The PA 7-350 is a *beast* of an amp! And one of the best deals ever when Emo was blowin' 'em out!

Outlaw don't accept 230VAC !!! You' re right about Nuforce: Classe D amps are too often "cold" and trebles are agressive ...but WAF !!!

I don't know how much was the original price... I find it expensive for a 5 five years second hand.. don't you?

For example: if I buy a brand new UPA 700: the price is $499, transport is $100, custom tax = $115 and VAT= $120, total cost: $834 or 600 euros

Finally the UPA-7 has a technical problem and no warranty... So the UPA-500 could be enought for me....but the UPA-700 allows me to envisage a 7.1 set up in the future, and its power supply is stronger.
What do you suggest ? an UPA-500 which can perfectly drive my little B&W M1 MKII and adding either a UPA-200 or a XPA-200 when I add two big fronts? Or directly use a UPA-700 ? Rationnaly the UPA-700 is the better choice, but in France we say: "the heart has its reasons, of which reason cannot know" (don't know if it sounds like in french)
