I want to be able to use my xda-2 DAC independently of my receiver and have it running directly to my XPA-5 amp without going through my receiver first. The only thing I can thing of is to use two 1-male/2 -female rca splitters on the left and right inputs in my amp. Theoretically my DAC and receiver can both be connected to my xpa5 simultaneously and I can use my DAC as a 2ch preamp for music. Will this work? I don't see a reason why it wouldn't.

Splitting an output from a preamp, for example, is fine. But splitting the inputs to a piece of gear is not necessarily a good thing.

I don't specifically know, but I think that this is a bad idea. Conceivably you could have two devices sending signals to the amp at the same time, this is a recipe for a blown amp and/or speakers under the wrong condition. You should use some kind of selector. Decware has an expensive one that shows this functionality. (All) Don't flame me because of the price, I just know that it exists and shows the configuration you are looking for. There are probably others. www.decware.com/newsite/ZSB.html

Absolutely correct You do NOT want to combine the outputs of two devices with a "splitter" unless it is intended for that purpose (in which case it will have isolation resistors). Not only COULD something really nasty happen, but there's a significant chance that it will cause the output of one or both devices to distort. Thoughts? The Niles AXP 1 has gotten great reviews and does exactly what I need.

I want to have the capability to use my DAC without switching cables: A) Directly to the power amp B) Directly to the pre/pro, and then to the same power (again, without manually switching cables or inputs) The Decware ZSB looks like a high quality unit whose 4 inputs, 2 outs can be configured in any number of combinations. You can even reverse it's function to make it 4 outputs, and 2 inputs. They make some bold claims about its "audiophileness" with a 30 day money back guarantee. www.decware.com/newsite/ZSB.htmlWith this unit you can run your DAC direct to power amp, or switch and route your DAC thru your AVR, or Pre/Pro to your same power amp without having to re-hookup wires. This would give you the option of using you HT unit's room control with certain music where you think this path sounds best. Good Luck www.decware.com/newsite/ZSB.html

Thank you for your advice. I've actually got the Niles axp1 rca switch and it does the job.
