Emocustomer, Monk and I are not trying to dis Atmos. You are just a bit more enthusiastic about it perhaps than us. As a reviewer, I just don't know how I will be able to evaluate different speakers and AVRs with this feature in meaningful way for someone trying to decide on Brand A vs. Brand B. I'm a big fan of mulitichannel SACD. I think everyone should get into them, but... So, we will all sit back and see what happens in the next year or so. At this point in time, I think Emotiva was smart to hold off on Atmos and not rush in there with a "me too" product. That said, if Dan rewires the Emo hometheater for next years Emofest with Atmos...well, I'm all ears!!

Or whether you want a mature implementation that's been validated. My biggest issue is that the amount of hype and excitement seems to far outweigh any technical information. Kudos to Emotiva for not rushing it to market just to play the buzz word game. Time will tell how much of a "must have" it becomes. It will take some objectivity to convince me - certainly more than "I heard a great demo somewhere".

My point stands. Atmos will live if the consumers adopt it. Most consumers have not adopted 5.1 Does that mean that 5.1 is dead too?

And now I have actually heard it in a HT setting, I am even more so. But it's not for everyone - just as 5.1 is not for everyone.

Has anybody heard a demo of Dobly Atmos for the home and not found it compelling? Any reviews from disinterested parties who have actually heard a demo state that it was not very good? I am just curious, not even sure how many people have actually heard the demos in person.
I read Emocustomers review and I must say, it sounds compelling. Just need to figure out where I might be able to hear it in my area once it is fully released.

I can’t see why it would run into serious WAF trouble. Anyone who has currently managed to get a 5.1 or 7.1 installation approved by the Aesthetics Committee should have no trouble getting an Atmos speaker system approved. From a purely visual POV it will look exactly the same.

I cannot see how anyone could be at all disappointed.

Has anyone else in this thread other than Emo-Atmos-cheerleader heard a demo? No. Demos are not available for the general public at this time. They will start at CEDIA. It's emocustomer or Keith, BTW, John

Keith is just as excited about Atmos as those here who are excited about the XMC. As long as everyone is civil and respectful, I want to see both sides of every story. When the XMC gets Atmos, you will then have something in common to talk about. Unless you want to talk about Emotiva amps. I think emocustomer has quite a collection thus living up to his moniker.

No - kbarnes701 is my user ID at AVS. And Soundchimp was traded in for emocustomer here. I look forward to some objectivity.... Someday.... Because all I've heard sounds like a sales pitch. Sales pitch? How come? I have nothing to sell to anyone nor any vested interest in Atmos at all. "You'll love it! Hear it! It's the best thing ever". I've heard it. You haven’t heard it. Whose opinion carries more weight right now, would you say? Can you think of a single con? Or is it just 1000 pros? Well you have to buy a new AVR or AVP. And more speakers for the ceiling, or the new Atmos speakers or modules. And you have to install it all. That's a con if you think of it that way. Did those things put you off 5.1 or 7.1? Normally when I learn about something I like to go beyond the glossy manufacturing brochure. I look forward to Dolby releasing some substantial information. They have released quite a lot so far. Just because you haven't seen it doesn’t mean it hasn't been made available to some. But they will be holding a major press conference in the next few weeks where they will reveal quite a lot more, publicly. Just because a demo in some room with 20 speakers sounds great is basically meaningless. An IMAX screen is huge too. So what? If you read the review I wrote, you'll see that the HT demo was a 7.2.4 system. A regular 7.1 system like a lot of people already have with 4 additional speakers installed on the ceiling. IDK where you get 20 from.

I think it would sell well.

It just means speakers with the top-mounted special module designed to Dolby Atmos specifications - 180 degree crossover (to the mains), specified directivity, designed to work in conjunction with DSP in the AVR.

So when using "enabled" speakers - is the top module fed by a discrete channel or not? Your description sounds like the answer is no. I always figured that it would be. Would that mean that ceiling speakers are not discrete then too? Or "sometimes"? I thought the biggest purpose of overhead speakers was for discrete sound effects - and that seems hard to so without discrete channels. I'm still fuzzy on what "supported" configurations will be - since it sounds rather flexible. Would be nice to see list of configurations from Most complicated to simplest.

I'm waiting for a pre/pro that includes Retsin. Why? Well, it make your breath smell fresh with Certs breath mints. So, it HAS to be good for audio to bring in a fresh sound. Right?

So when using "enabled" speakers - is the top module fed by a discrete channel or not? Your description sounds like the answer is no. It is fed by a discrete signal, yes. I always figured that it would be. Would that mean that ceiling speakers are not discrete then too? Or "sometimes"? They are discrete. If something I said implied differently then I apologize. I thought the biggest purpose of overhead speakers was for discrete sound effects - and that seems hard to so without discrete channels. Which is why they are discrete. It's more than 'sound effects' though. The top speakers are essential for allowing Atmos to place sounds in the correct x, y, z co-ordinates. Any sound object can be rendered to any co-ordinate. It could be dialogue for example. And it was in 'Gravity'. I'm still fuzzy on what "supported" configurations will be - since it sounds rather flexible. Would be nice to see list of configurations from Most complicated to simplest. Not entirely sure what you mean, but they are, if I understand what you are asking: 5.1.2 5.1.4 7.1.2 7.1.4 This is for the Atmos units so far released. There is a ludicrously expensive unit coming from Trinnov which will support 32 speakers.
