I recently bought a used erc-1. Upon receiving it I noticed that on the faceplate the words "next" and "stop" are not present next to the control buttons where they go. After real close inspection there is no evidence that they were ever there. Does anyone know if they ever came like this? I have never seen another like it. It works flawlessly.

I also bought a used ERC 1 but both next and stop are present. Pretty sure they used to be on yours as well.

I haven't owned an ERC-1, but my guess is the white stencil and lettering has simply worn away. Some folks have experienced this issue on components as well as with some remote controls (my original UMC-1 remote did this very quickly after I started using it, the replacement remote has not experienced this issue).
From my research at archive.org, it appears the ERC-1 was originally launched around May 2009 and was available for a couple of years. I checked several capture dates and the images all show white lettering for the Stop/Next buttons. So this would confirm my suggestion that the lettering has worn off, either from use or from a problem with the stencil process during that specific production run.
