So some of my yard sale discs say "DSD" or "DSD2." I see that Oppo can play them if I want to put the discs in, but I normally stream. JRiver says that they can rip them, but that they'll be converted to PCM on playback since "most devices can't work with such high sample rates."
So my questions are:
If I want to rip the DSD discs at native format, can I do it with JRiver or do I need different software?
If I want to play back the DSD files at native resolutions, can I do it with JRiver or do I need different playback software?
Is it worth the bother to rip these files, or should I just keep the (few) DSD, DSD2, & SACD discs around for native playback from the Oppo?
Thanks - Boomzilla

Thanks - Boomzilla DSD is the format used by SACDs so I assume these are SACDs.. There are no computer drives that can read the DSD layer from an SACD, only the redbook layer of a hybrid CD. And SACD players will only output the DSD over HDMI.

Plus almost all of my SACDs are multi-channel. Thus, my Oppo 103. If only one could burn their surround SACD collection onto a HD or the Olive One...but alas....

There are two ways to rip the files that I know of. One involves the first model of the PS3. Info at the link: www.computeraudiophile.com/f11-software/sacd-ripping-using-your-ps3-part-2-a-7495/The other way is to do a needle drop by playing the disc and recording the analog output with your computer using a program like Wavepad. The last method is not as good as the first, but it produces a usable file that you can play from the computer or server and it will sound better than anything but a killer cd. I ripped my sacds that way, but I still listen to the discs themselves for the best fidelity. Trey

If updated past a certain version, you won't be able to use it to rip an SACD.

What about the legality of ripping CDs and then selling them (SACD or not)?

What about the legality of ripping CDs and then selling them (SACD or not)? I don't do that. I've got over 2,000 CDs on my shelves (and a similar number in the attic) that I've ripped. If I rip it, I keep it. Stuff I don't want to rip, I sell. As to the DSD/SACD discs, I'll just keep the media & play it when I want.

What about the legality of ripping CDs and then selling them (SACD or not)? Technically, the second you no longer own a CD you no longer own the right to have a copy in your possession and your copies must be destroyed as they are no longer licensed copies.
