...i usually watch the woofers as i am turning up the volume. my reason for this is becuase sometimes i like to listen to the music loud. what appears loud to me at first, i take a look at the woofers and the woofers usually are hardly moving. so i turn it up even louder, so i can truly listen to loud music. i watch the woofers at this point to make sure they're not moving to much, (so i don't damage my speakers.) is this a good way to help prevent your speakers from being damaged?

You might be more concerned about your ears...

No. Some speakers are designed for high excursion woofers. What can damage speakers are clipping (distortion), amps running out of power, and continous power above driver specifications that damage the speaker. Short term impulses above rated power is normal just not continous.

You might be more concerned about your ears... LOL, i usually get them going to an estimate of about 50-75% of how far i think they can travel. just so they have a safe distance before bottoming out. i've been to about at least 50 rock concerts over the years including the grateful dead, AC/DC, the rolling stones, metallica, etc. the concerts were way louder than what my system can put out, so i don't think hearing loss is a concern.

Hearing loss is easy to achieve especially given time. It depends on the loudness and more importantly the DURATION of the sound exposure. Listening to a concert once a month for 3 hour may not be as damaging as listening too loud though much softer than a concert everyday. Osha reccomends 85db or less for an 8 hour period. While the permissible amount is 90db or less for an 8 hour period. Increase of 3-5 db tends to cut the amount of time exposed in half. So for instance a 90db sound is reccomended to be 2 hours a day etc www.etymotic.com/pdf/guide_safe_listening_earphones.pdf^The above link on page 2 is very useful to gain an idea of how loud is loud www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Ears_ways_to_protect_your_hearing

Watching a woofer move tells you absolutely nothing about how close it might be to being excursion limited. Plus it's tweeters that are far more likely to be destroyed by overpower than woofers.

(duration is more important) when I do listen at loud levels, it's not for very long, maybe an hour.

If you can hear it hitting the mech stops, THEN you are over-driving it.
