I have a HTPC with huge hard drive filled with movies, TV shows and music; using "Movie Collector" VLC and J River.
Recently I installed Plex server on my HTPC (free download), basically turning it stand alone harddrive media server. Then I got a $35 Chromecast, and the $5 Flex app for my iPhone and have a great system. I use the phone as a remote, and FLEX does a wonderful job of organizing my tv shows and movies. I choose a show, and the iPhone hands off the choice to Chromecast which downloads the movie in real time from the PLEX server on my former HTPC. It looks great and everything works flawlessly. I'm really impressed. Next, I'm going switch from iPhone to an iPad, whose bigger screen will make movie selection even slicker. Plus I've got all the Chromecast apps and programming. Best $40 I've ever spent.
I've also got an AppleTV and Apple Airport Express to play with. I've been using that for music, but I could also use PLEX for music. I don't like iTunes.
Can anyone suggest favorite apps for Chromecast or XBMC which I've also been experimenting with and like. Anyone with Chromecast or Flex feedback?
Sincerely /b
p.s. For FLEX to be able in intelligently organize your TV shows and movies, it's important for you to use the Flex filename format.

These are the Apps/Programs that I live on via the Chromecast:
- Vudu (you download the Vudu App and use the cast tab within) - Netflix (duh, right) - Google Music (I pay the monthly fee for "all you can eat") - YouTube - Revision3
