Have you ever heard of this stuff - is it really something that 'people' buy? I have never heard about such a concept, but I am a novice at most things audio, maturing slowly !!
Pitch in if you can share some light on this.

A CD Cutter is one of those things you buy after the $6000.00 power cable and those little speaker wire bridges that keep the wire off the floor....

This is truly retarded...this is for people who don't know how a CD players actually work. I'd love to see them prove it does anything anything except shrink the disc.

Sorry, guys. I don't plan on buying one, but I do find the hypothesis credible. I've put discs into drives before that sound like out-of-balance washing machines when the RPMs rise. Yes, some ARE out of round. All these variations probably DO trigger the interpolation features of the player.
Now, that said, trimming the edge won't help with an out-of-round disc if it was initially burned out of round. The only thing that the cutter could do would be to trim the edges to help balance the disc around the axis.
The easier way to fix out of round discs is not to trim them, but to rip them at lower speeds. The lower the speed, the better able the drive to track slight imperfections and the less likely that the error correction circuits will be needed. So ultimately, this "disc cutter" machine solves a problem, but only in rare cases, and only if the owner isn't willing to rip more slowly.

Poppycock. Google "odd shaped CDs" and you'll see that CDs can be made into almost ANY shape. I have a promo Beatle CD that is in the shape of the Fab Four that are pictured on it. ..and it plays fab!

It should be easy to do a test for this.
1. Buy 2 CD's: CD-1 and CD-2. 2. Verify that CD-1 and CD-2 sound the same. 2. Degrade the "balance" of CD-1 by sanding off some material, from just one half of the edge of the CD. This should force the CD player to do all that error-correction, recovery, etc. 3. Compare the sound of CD-1 and CD-2 again.
CD-1 should sound worse now.
Perhaps the full test would be to then buy the CD Cutter and repair CD-1. CD-1 should then sound better than CD-2.

Gee! I learned a new audio term - 'high frequency glare'.
Wish I hadn't watched that video!
I can't get the 'high frequency glare' outta my head...
As for a CD being out of balance - well the spin at a varying rate from 500rpm's to 350rpm's depending on where its reading. Faster at the inner tracks and slower at the outer tracks. The disc is very light weight - it would take a serious manufacturing screwup to make out of balance discs and likely wouldn't make it to market except on some of the cheaper labels.
