Im in the process of purchasing an XDA/2 XPA-200 combo for a stereo listening set-up. Im aware that the XDA-2 can only run two channels. Im wondering if I can run my balanced outputs to the amp which then powers my speakers and then the unbalanced RCA's to the powered subwoofer? Will this work, if so it is a good idea or will I run into some issues?

Yes, many use it that way. It will work fine as long as you manually adjust your subwoofer's crossover and level.

Interesting.... Never considered this before. So are you considering running RCA cables from the L and R outputs of the preamp to the L and R inputs of a single sub, or multiple subs?

I only have one subwoofer so I would be running both the L and R to the one sub but I suppose Running stereo subs would be just as easy.

Running both balanced & unbalanced at the same time can create issues on some preamps , when you run both simultaneously the ohmage can be cut in half , im not familiar with your preamps ohmage or its capabilities so i cant say for sure but i suspect you'll notice a difference at the volume control , ive ran both simultaneously before as well as running Y splitters & have had issues due to the ohmage being split to 2 different signal paths .
The best advice i can give is that you try it & see if you like it , i highly doubt it will harm the amplifier or sub being that there is no standard ohmage figure for preamps so it's worth a shot , you might end up needing to turn the volume control up to much higher levels in order to obtain the listening level your used to , or the pre can max out it's headroom .

The issue would be the output impedance of the preamp and the input impedance of the power amp and subwoofer - it's desirable to have a preamp with a low output impedance and an amp with a high input impedance. These days most solid state amps have a fairly high input impedance and there would not be a problem. If he were using older tube amps it might be an issue, but since he didn't mention his amps good to bring it up.

With my XDA-2, I've been running two subwoofers and two mono block amplifiers, exactly as you stated, for over a year now. As AudioHTIT said, the Subwoofers must have their own crossovers and level controls.
No volume differences. No load mismatches. No excessive heat at output stages. Absolutely no problems. Just beautiful music with very deep and powerful Bass.

To clarify I would be using the XDA-2 as a DAC as well as my pre-amp. My power amplifier would be the XPA-200

Correct, you won't have problems. Just adjust the gain (volume control) on the subwoofer to match . For instance run a frequency sweep from youtube and try to get it to match the volume as best as you can with the front speakers.

When I owned an XDA-2, I ran this exact configuration for a time: XDA-2 to XPA-200 (via XLR) + XDA-2 to subwoofer (via RCA). It worked great!
Like others have mentioned, you just have to adjust the subwoofer gain, phase, and crossover setting manually since the XDA-2 has no bass management capabilities.
