XPR-5 help

Just received my new XPR-5 today. It arrived in prefect condition. I have it plugged in to it's own dedicated 20amp outlet. Problem is that as soon as I turn it on I get a LOUD hum from all 5 speakers for a few seconds and then breaker trips.I have checked all speaker cables and RCA connections nothing appears to be shorted out or touching each other. So I reset the breaker and the same thing happened again. I then decided to unplug all the equipment from the amplifier and plug it in directly to the wall outlet without a single speaker or rca connection on it and turn it on. Breaker still trips after about 2 seconds. I have an electrician coming tomorrow afternoon to check outlet and breaker. I am not sure what's wrong since I ran an XPA-5 on that breaker for years with no issue. I sure hope my new amp is not defective. I will call Emotiva on the morning. Any suggestions would be helpful

Try plugging something else into the outlet, table lamp etc. If it works OK then it's most likely the XPR-5.
Cheers Gary

Have a stiff drink, go to bed, get a good nights sleep and call Emotiva in the morning. Cheers Gary

Been up for the past few hours trying to figure this out. No luck. The amp totally trip's the 20amp breaker. I tried a lot of other high power items in that outlet last night. Not a problem with anything else. I even ran my wife's 1800 watt hair dryer on it for a while and no problem. I am now pretty sure there is a problem with the XPR -5

Bummer joehzar, Sorry about your disappointing news. Since you have done the obvious, connecting lamps, hair dryer, etc into the same outlet having no issues it seems that you may have received an XPR5 that has issues. This may help you feel better. I know that time means everything in circumstances like this so I suggest that when the doors open at Emotiva you give them a call one minute after their doors open. I will drop a name here....Nick. Ask for Nick. I had a problem with both of my XPA1's after just two weeks. Nick was very helpful. You may want to ask them to ship you a new XPR while your XPR is in transit to Emotiva. It has been done. At least that will cut your down time to half.
Hope this helps

Spoke to Scott at Emotiva this morning. They are going to send out a new unit and issue a call tag for the other one. They did want my credit card information to put a pending charge on until the defective XPR-5 is returned. Scott did say that he would try and have someone test the new unit before shipping to avoid any problems. O well no amp for another week. Hopefully the new one will work just fine.

Hey joehzar, glad to hear you are being taken care of and remember have patience and PLEASE do not cry over this mis fortune...LOL Seriously though, I would think that you will receive the amp before a week. If you called early enough it is possible it that it would ship today. Even tomorrow you could receive the XPR by Tuesday. Standard procedure with the credit card. They originally made that offer to me but I chose to wait. The credit card was a bit beaten if you know what I mean.
Keep us informed and enjoy the weekend.

I am not sure if it will make the Friday shipping deadline. Scott said that the new one will be opened and tested to ensure that its operational before they ship it out. Now that's great service! !!

I received the replacement XPR -5 yesterday. I didn't have a chance to hook it up yesterday but did decide to at least test it. I plugged it in to the dedicated 20amp outlet. Turned it on..... no tripped breaker. ...but left channel flashing red and it went into protect mode. So i powered the unit off. Turned it back on fired right up!!!!!!!!!! Going to hook it up tonight after work. Can't wait to hear it!!!!

joehzar..Glad you received the XPR back. Don't know why it would go in protect mode. As you stated the XPR was tested before being shipped to you so there cannot be and issue with the XPR. PErhaps it was from a sudden surge of electrical current once you made a connection.
I had similar issues with TWO XPA1's. They were shipped back to Emotiva, bench tested for a few days with no issues. Weird right. Emotiva gave me the choice to either accept the two amps that they looked over or receive two new amps. I chose the latter, however I also purchased two heavy duty power cords for the XPA's. Very nice and they were a TIGHT fit both into the receptacle and the XPA itself. They are a splendid piece of equipment and beautiful to look at displayed in the front of my HT room.
Good luck and keep us informed with your progress.

Hope all will go well for you Joe. I have the XPR-5 too. During the first few weeks of operation the unit, after 4-5 hours of continuous playing, would kick into protect mode on one of the unused channels. I was using only two channels, running it through my 2 channel Adcom preamp. No XMC-1 yet. I called Emotiva, and told them about the problem. They suggested that I try using two different channels to see if they also would push the unit into protect mode on one of the 3 unused channels. I connected my speakers into the outer channels #1 & #5 . It took another two weeks before it happened again. Now all I do is toggle the unit off, and then right back on, and it doesn't reappear. I have since changed the way I have the connection into my Adcom preamp to act as a straight wire. It now is bypassing all tone controls inside the Adcom. That change was maybe two months ago , since the change, no problems. I use my audio equipment more than 12 hours everyday. Previously I powered my speakers with two Aragon mono block amps, in all respect to my older amplifiers, those boys were 20 years old. The musical change I hear from my Emotiva XPR-5 is absolutely amazing. My speakers came to life a new. I would expect that you will also have this pleasant experience of musical enjoyment.

Always best to inquire and make sure there's no concerns with that 'odd channel' experiance. My XPR-5 was a VAST improvment to my speakers and HT system, and continues to operate perfectly after 2.5 years of everyday use, and twice a week heavy-duty movie use at near reference levels, so far, (knock on wood...OUCH!).
