Alright, I posted my unprofessional review of the ERD-1s on AVS forums, so if you all don't mind, I'll just do a copy -n- paste of it here.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, today is day 3 of my listening to the the ERD-1 speakers. I've been using them as front LR so I can get them broke in. I did move them to the rear for last nights Nascar Bud shootout so I could listen in 5.1. I have to say, Nascar never sounded so good! Well, it may be that I just miss those guys. I'm a huge race fan. I only miss races when I golf, another of my 'hobbies'. Or taking a ride on the GeezerGlide!
Anyway, I think I've got em broke in now. Geez, I better, I've been using them nonstop since Friday morning when I first got them.
These speakers have amazing sound for as small as they are. I'll be keeping them. My bro in law is a musician and he was floored by how such a small speaker could deliver such a big sound. He is used to big sound from big speakers. And he was listening to them before they started to loosen up.
I'm thinking that there are a lot of HT users out there that could simply use 4 or 6 of these with a good sub and center and never miss a 3 way speaker setup. They are bright but not overly so, and can be controlled some by the switches on the back side of them. Bass? For a 5 1/2" driver, I'm very surprised they deliver as well as they do. My first impression was they didn't go as low as Emo specs them to, down to 60hz, but they've seemed to loosen up and deliver tighter bass than the JBL E50 bookshelfs but not as low. I'm using a 100hz crossover in the AVR. Sounds pretty damn good for such a small speaker. The E50s have an 8" driver in a ported enclosure, so thats saying a lot for these little wonders.
If the new 6.3 speakers do as well I'll be a very happy camper. I'm thinking they will replace my current but rather old Infinity IL40s very well. I'll have to give some further thought on that however, I love my IL40s. Best speaker in the Interlude lineup, IMO. I've only been using them as the fronts for 2 years now, ever since I sold the IL50s so they are relatively new.
Anyway, they do exactly what they are supposed to do, they deliver very nice crisp highs and decent mid range audio spectrum and the bass isn't as neglected as you might think with such a small mid driver. I don't think they go to 60hz with any authority but as always, YMMV.
If you are contemplating a set of wall hangers, these just may be to your liking. Compact and nice looking to boot. They came with 2 sets of grilles, the ones with standoff magnetic holders, and ones that fit flush with magnetic holders. The flush ones look worlds better IMO.
Seriously, anyone thinking about a new set of speakers for a 5.1 or 7.1 would do well to audition these in their own home. For multi channel music at less than ear shattering levels I think they would deliver quite acceptable sound. I'm not ready to trade in my fronts for a pair of these but for dedicated HT use these would excel.
Of course, my opinion, YMMV, as always.
Damn, I just went to the Emo website, they have the 6.3s for sale starting tomorrow. And the 8.3s are also on sale starting tomorrow. Lots of new orders I'm thinking!
What to do....what to do? Damn.
Damn I love this hobby.
I hope all of you reading this review have enjoyed it. I'm not a professional reviewer. I don't write gushing reviews unless I really like something. In the case of these ERD-1s, I really do. I was a bit disappointed at first, they sounded rather thin, but thats changed. Got to let em break in.
Now, off to see where I can dig up some bux for a new set of 6.3s.
