Does anyone else feel that there is a lack of decent new movies lately? I don't expect every new movie to be a blockbuster, especially since that doesn't guarantee that it is a good movie. Most aren't in my opinion, but that is another thread. It seems as over the last several months my Netflix que has dwindled. At one point I thought I would never get through my list (especially since I typically will have a movie sit around for a week before watching it) and now I can't even find enough to add to my que to make it worth my while.

Netflix has done very little to bring new material lately. Amazon prime and hulu plus offer a variety of movies/shows that netflix does not. I cut the cable about five years ago, and have survived of from digital broadcast and streaming. One thing that helps is doing a DVD/blueray plan with netflix.
I think netflix is investing a majority of there Capitol into original programing, leaving the streaming to class b movies for the most part.

Well I thought about what I've seen lately. In the last few months I've seen six movies in the theatre – "Chef", "Boyhood", "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes", "A Most Wanted Man", & "Guardians of the Galaxy". I would recommend them all except "A Most Wanted Man", which while very well acted was just too slow and long for me (though I could hardly call it a bad movie). So I've been entertained, but I don't know that everyone else would agree.

I don't believe that Netflix is the issue. I look up new release Blu-rays to see what has come out before searching Netflix. Nothing seems to really grab my attention.

I have not been keeping up very well with recent releases but I get mighty tired of remakes and reboots. There are plenty of original ideas out there that could make awesome films in my opinion but Hollywood seems gutless now and prefers to take what it considers the "safe" option rather than trying something new.Same with television and not giving new shows a chance to find an audience.Three or four episodes if you are lucky and if it doesn't pull in big numbers it's cancelled.

I would concur that I have also been underwhelmed with the movies in recent weeks/months. Glad that football season is starting. Premier League Soccer starts today too.

Agreed, Nexflix' library has really gone down hill as of late. I agree with Judd as well. I haven't been really keeping up with new releases much, but I started paying attention in the past couple weeks, and was surprised at the lack of stuff that really piques my interest. Crappy re-makes, and b-movie ripoffs of major films seem to all that's lining the shelves right now. I think that probably has something to do with all of the big "tentpole" films that have been flops lately. Perhaps Hollywood will stop and realize that incoherent movies with mind numbing sound and CGI does not a good movie make...

It's funny because I was thinking the exact opposite. The last few movies I've seen were all amazing. Here are my last couple ones that are worth watching (depending on what kinds of movies you like of course), Her, Jodorowsky's Dune (a documentary but still), Knights Of Badassdon (2013 so may not qualify), Sound City (also 2013 and a doc), Only Lovers Left Alive, The Lego Movie, The Zero Theorem, and Transcendence. They may be out of the theatres by a bit but it's about as new as I get haha. Have no clue about Netfilx though. Would post a few more but they'd all be from 2013.

Something I've noticed is that TV shows -at least the good ones - are becoming significantly better than they used to. Better writing, better plot, dialogue and acting on the whole. I saw some pretty good movies recently American Hustle, Guardians of the Galaxy, Dallas Buyers club. Not everybody's cup of tea but I enjoyed it.

I agree there have been a few excellent shows of late - I would rank Breaking Bad up there among the best of them.

What I have noticed with a lot of movies these days is that Social Media allows them to just roll out a film, It doesn't have to be "good". it gets hyped like crazy and puts up insane numbers in the theaters. Once that happens the Blu ray release is touted as "the release of the year" and they sell millions of copies.
Most of these movies aren't "bad" but they could be done much better.
I also check the release calender frequently and this year I am a bit disappointed in what is available. However, they will still add some good titles before the year is over.
If you are looking for a great/fun watch pick up "The Muppets Most Wanted" HILARIOUS!

You are so bloody correct, even if it's nothing new under the Sun. The cinema hi-end industry main problem is not the hardware, but the movies. The last decent action movie I saw was The Avengers. The art movies could be slow, or boring, not enough to impress the tools. Another deception.

And isn't it funny how they advertise how a movie is "the most popular" and "the best new movie this week" BEFORE it's showing anywhere Of course - and this is why "social media" is so wonderful for marketing - the bast way to get people to like something is to tell them that "everybody else likes it".... go figure. To drop a quote from one of my favorite obscure songs: "Everybody wants to be an individual; everybody else does too.") What I have noticed with a lot of movies these days is that Social Media allows them to just roll out a film, It doesn't have to be "good". it gets hyped like crazy and puts up insane numbers in the theaters. Part of the problem, IMO, is that fewer and fewer movies are made for adults. Most seem to be aimed at 14 year old boys. Most of the "comedies" released today are not funny, again IMO. And the action stuff is just "try to top that" silly.
That's OK by me, but not for me. So, naturally, I am disappointed with the selection offered by Netflix, and most other providers as well.
I used to be on their "5" plan plus streaming. Now down to the "2" plan, and sometimes that one is hard to keep full.
I love the movies. But in my mid '60s, I am not the audience for these films.
