A very fair, and insightful review. Wow...make me want to get one. Thanks for sharing!

I was very impressed with the sound of the ERC-3 when I put it in my system. I previously had the ERC-1 then later ran that through a XDA-2 for improved reproduction. I found that the ERC-3 trumped both the ERC-1 and the XDA-2 in sound quality and reproduction.

I was a little disappointed with this review. He never said how the ERC-3's sound quality compared to his other sources! Fast load times, sure. But how does it sound compared to the competition?

I agree. I get the impression that while the ERC-3 sounds really good to the reviewer, I don't think it sounds any better than the other sources used in the review. We all know how good the Oppo sounds so I'm not surprised...

It looked like he thought it was as good as the oppo 103.

To me the most telling sentence is I don't think it is unreasonable to interpret that as saying the ERC-3 was better than everything else, so it became the point of reference when determining exactly how inferior the others were. But as an ERC-3 owner I'm biased FWIW, I found the ERC-3 sounded noticeably better than an Oppo 103 and so close to a 105 that I couldn't reliably pick the difference. Cheers Gary

A four page review, and you have to read between the lines, and try to figure out how the author thought it sounded ? Sheesh. Probably has something to do with the fact that both Emo, and Oppo advertise on their website.

An interesting point Lonnie mentioned last Saturday at the roadshow here in LA is the laser they used on the ERC-3. I forgot now what he called them... something laser 3 or level 3. Anyway, the point was this is a very powerful laser and if not for the calibration they did, Lonnie said it can burn a hole in the CD (not sure if he was serious there). What does it mean for us? Lonnie said that with this laser even scratched up CDs can still be read by the laser and we'll hear the music as if there is no scratch. Don't know why their marketing materials doesn't mention this. Sounds like a very good selling feature. Lonnie, correct me if I heard you wrong.

I also noticed that only unbalanced outputs were tested, since the Anthem 300/310 only had unbalanced inputs. So, while there was a comparison to the OPPO, it was not used with Balanced connections.
The ERC-3 is really good and reading CD's that you though were lost due to scratches, improper handling or storage (like found in one of those old auto Visor holders from years back....).

For about $10 and some elbow grease I can get rid of scratches from a lot of CD's.

I appreciate that there is no "This sounds like the best thing since Screeching Weasel" nor "This sounds terrible when compared to my Ubermatic Mach 7." Subjective judgements like that are meaningless to everyone except the reviewer.

The problem with chocolatey sound is what is that chocolate covering up?

How would the ERC-3 compare to a lower quality CD player that was using the DC-1 as its DAC?

I agree that the review pulled its punches. I find the ERC-3 just a bit better on CDs than my Oppo 103, but then the Oppo plays anything. I'm pleased with the purchase and the build quality. The sound is terrific.
