So is that strip a tweeter AND mid unit you got there? What are you going to use for crossover?

Very nice! I would love to hear what these sound like. Sadly Parts Express doesn't ship to Canada so that kinda sucks. From the price of the RD40's though (at least in US$), it doesn't seem all that expensive really considering that their speakers go for $4000+.
I'm having a really hard time finding a pair of speakers in my price range that work for me. I have too much music that is recorded poorly which doesn't help. How forgiving are these speakers?
Thanks for sharing.

wow, very expensive drivers ! 566.5 $ each ! but do you think it will match in sensitivity considering the mid-tweeter 2 db above the subwoofer ? usually the woofers have more sensitivity.

Beautiful fabrication and bevel work! Would be awesome to be able to audition these. Scott Thanks Man! So is that strip a tweeter AND mid unit you got there? What are you going to use for crossover? Yes. The planer driver is good down to about 200hz. To keep the power handling and dynamics high, I'll crossover about 350hz to 450hz Passive crossovers suck. I'll actively bi-amp just like I'm doing now. I've already had these drivers running on a couple occasions. Since I'm already bi-amping, I just took the tweeter/mid feed from my B&W's and sent it to the B&G's and kept using the B&W woofs. This will have my tubes running the planers and my XPA-1's running the subs. wow, very expensive drivers ! 566.5 $ each ! but do you think it will match in sensitivity considering the mid-tweeter 2 db above the subwoofer ? usually the woofers have more sensitivity. These are subs, not woofs. They play well into the 20's. And no, most subs are significantly lower sensitivity than 86db. Speaker designers don't waste a lot of time trying to match driver sensitivities. It's next to impossible, and not an important spec. Virtually every speaker manufacturer pads their drivers thru their crossovers to get the level they need. That's why the majority of speaker crossovers are complex and expensive. Most speaker designers would be thrilled to have only a 2 db difference in their drivers. Lastly, this is just one of the beauties of active line level crossovers, gain/cut can be adjusted on the fly. As can the crossover point and sometimes the slope.

Kent, when you get these done and are ready to show them off, I would like to drive up and give them a listen if you are willing to accept visitors. -Bradley

It'll be after the holidays for sure. I'm way too busy and progress is S-L-O-W. Do I remember correctly, you live in Westcliffe?

ok, i see you're creating bi-amped sub-satellite combination using active crossover. well, that makes everything more simple. good luck ! seems someone will get b 'n w 804s at decent price

The cabinets are assembled, glued and screwed, but there's a whole lot of detail work to be done before the finish can be applied, These stand just about 6' tall:

Sorry I have not got back to you yet but I am really enjoying the Jolida's. They have nasty little ground loop hum that I am using a ground lifter plug until I have time to find the source. Any ideas? Thanks Mark

Maybe we can get together. Ground loop? Weird. Not only did I never have that problem with the Jolida's, but in 40 years enjoying this hobby I've NEVER had a ground loop problem. Are the tubes powered on the same circuit as the rest of your rack? You have any subs powered on a different circuit?

You are quite the designer. I am impressed. Maybe you should market these. If they sound 1/2 as good as they look you should have a winner

We have toyed with the idea of taking them to the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in 2015. It might happen but we're just having fun at this point.

First two coats of epoxy primer. You may not even tell the difference in the photos. But this is where you start to "mold" the pieces of MDF into a cohesive cabinet. Still much work to do.... Peace

1st coat of paint on cabinets. I tried to get a color that would compliment the dark red we have in our front room. The front of the cabinets will be Walnut:

I get the same feeling looking in a mirror as I get looking at your speakers. They just keep getting better looking every time I see them. Really beautiful work..

Finally Finished! Four months. And yeah, they sound INCREDIBLE.
The camera flash is doing weird things to the color. Kinda looks bright red, even orange. In reality they are a very deep burgandy.
