I would appreciate advice from those of you who have heard both the XPA-1L and the XPA-1 Gen. 2. I am about to buy an XMC-1 and I need two more channels of amplification for my front L&R speakers in a 7.1 system. The speakers have an 87db efficiency rating and can play from 16Hz to 35kHz. My room is 17'x15'x8' and the listening position is 9' from the L&R speakers. Based purely on performance would there be a significant difference between the two amps in my room? Obviously, there is a major difference in price.

My speakers (Mirage OMD 28's) are 87 db as well. I purchased the XPA I Gen. 2's for this reason alone. The 28's are power hungry!!!!!! They are almost a year old and broken in. The XPA's are a bit over 2 months old still kind of breaking in. The point is, the XPA's have yet to come close to running out of steam and I tend to drive them rather hard. IMHO, you can't go wrong here with the big mono blocks espically if you tend to listen at louder levels. I need to mention that I am running a 2 channel system not home theater. Either way a speaker with 87 db effeciency needs mega power to drive the speaker and have ample head room for transient peaks. Some may argue that the mains in a home theater are still effects speakers and only add ambience, and therefore don't require large amounts of power to tbe driven, this may be so. However if you do any 2 channel listening then that argument goes out the window. Either way the added power provided will never hurt. Remember, power does not damage speakers, underpowered amps trying to keep up will damage speakers everytime. Go big or save your money until you can.

What were you using to drive the OMD 28's before the XPA-1's?
