Hello all,
I have a bit of stupid question here, but figured I would ask anyway. I have a cousin on a super tight budget who wants to use his car audio subs for his HT setup. In theory, I don't see any reason why he couldn't do so, then just get a pro amp to power them for a low cost subwoofer system.
He has a pair of Kicker 12" car audio subs in a slot port box that he is considering using.
Any serious drawbacks to doing this?
Any special considerations?
What say you?

No problem, done it plenty of times.

The drivers would be ok, but usually car sub boxes are tuned to a much higher frequency (40hz or so) than ht sub boxes. In the enclosed space of a car you can use cabin gain to get the lows, but when you put that box in a large space like a house, it won't dig very deep.

Yep. A speaker is a speaker. But as has been stated, using a car audio enclosure can create problems. They are typically designed to maximize SPL in the small volume of a vehicle, and generally designed as physically small as possible so they can "fit" into a car. This typically does not work well in a home. Pull the drivers and design a proper enclosure for them and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the info all. Is there an online calculator (or alternate way) to determine the proper box/enclosure to build for deepest bass response?

Of course as the guys have mentioned the frequency response of the subwoofers is relevant as it is with all speakers. Kickers do also have 2 or 4 ohm impedance models, which is also necessary information for amp selection. I've used a 12" Competition Kicker in a 100 litre ported box that dipped below 20 hz in a large 4 wd application. Would have made a more than OK HT subwoofer. So check the specs of the particular model is the best suggestion.

Thank you for the info and links guys. My cousin has been talking about doing this, but I wasn't sure if it was such a great idea. I am pleased with my Emo U sub 12's for now, but he will be thrilled to know this idea is feasible.
