Renting these discs is becoming quite a chore. Is Redbox now the only option? What am I missing? I know people are doing a lot of streaming, but the audio and video quality is piss poor in comparison. In most cases i want to rent before I buy. I miss Blockbuster

Around here we still have Family Video. They get all the new Blu-rays when they get released. See if you can find a family owned video store in your area. Or get a friend that likes to buy all the movies when they are released.

If you are also concerned with audio and if you're here, I assume you are - you should know some, but not all rental blu-rays are limited to Dolby Digital rather than the HD audio formats.

True, but I can get an idea of if it is worth buying from DD. We rarely go to the movies when it costs a family of four almost $100. And we cant agree on what to see anyways.

Anything I am remotely interested in I buy on release date. If I don't want it, I turn around and sell it for $10-15
I have a few friends that always call me on Wednesday (day after release) and ask if I am keeping the movie or not.

So why is it that many rental Blu-rays don't contain an HD audio track??? The commercially bought ones will, but often not the rentals...so beware when buying used rental Blu-rays on eBay! Does Netflix still have the 'discs by mail' option where you can get the actual Blu-ray disc and not have to put up with the dumbed-down quality that streaming offers? I'm with Pop though, I buy what I want to see (usually through eBay, or Amazon), then just re-sell those I don't want to keep. This way you always get the best audio & video, and can recover most of your money on the turkeys...

They are more than Redbox but were less than Blockbuster. The one downside to Redbox is that they don't always have the new releases. You have to wait a few weeks to a month before they get it. I don't mind paying a few bucks more to see it right when it comes out. Also they do have monthly deals for people that like to rent a lot. Right now I like them more than Redbox.

I admit, I will occasionally buy used rental blu-rays from Redbox for $5. But only ones that I am unsure i really want or a movie in which sound isn't a priority. I'm more likely to buy a low-budget horror movie or a drama than something with an engaging surround mix.
And yes, you can still rent discs from netflix - dvd.netflix.com Despite the address, they do have blu ray

Aside from netflix, are there other internet/over the mail rental companies for BDs? I tried doing a search, but it seems that most people who used to do it, do not anymore.

I hardly ever come across blue rays with only dolby digital.. maybe 1 in 100.. I love my redbox lol cheers

My library is quite good with getting new blu rays out on the shelves. And even better they release the tv series as well. For other I did redbox. I had a good time when blockbuster hada 3 out at a time unlimited pass and it was close to my house. I watched every single new movie and played every game that was worth playing, never worried about late fees.
