So I'm getting to the point where I need to make or order at least 1 sound absorption panel for behind my TV. I have a 65" Plasma that will be about 12-18" away from the wall (not sure the exact distance yet). When I first set it up the change from going from my old CRT "box" TV to this flat panel was terrible. The sound got all muddy and garbled. So what I did was literally hang a couple of bath towels behind the TV and whalla, back to good sound. So I know adding sound absorption behind the TV is a must, but I just don't know how much. I know I can make it for cheaper, but for 1 panel it's really not worth the effort for me so I'm just going to buy it from here. www.atsacoustics.com/panelsI'm thinking I'll get a 24 x 48 panel and hang it sideways directly behind the TV. What would you recommend thickness wise? 2" or 4"? What's the real difference between the 2 thickness'? Thanks for any advice and/or information you can give. Cheers ---- Bonzo

Hey Bonzo!, for wall panels 2" thick should work just fine, just make sure you get good coverage... (I used the 4" when I built my corner bass traps, but that was for a different application).

A 2 inch panel is going to absorb a whole lot more sound than the towel is. Even a one inch panel would. Which is what I recommend. Try Acoustimac.

Behind the TV then go for the 4" especially since it is just one panel. You will get some more absorption vs the 2" at lower frequencies.
Only reason I would go with 2" is I really did not like how the 4" looked ie too think.

Well from what you guys are saying, the thicker it is the more it affects the bass. Bass has never been a problem for me up front (my back left corner behind the bar next to the refrigerator is another story!!!!). 2" might be the safer bet just so there is a bit of room to let more sound in and bounce off the back of the TV and get into the trap. Especially if 2" is going to be more absorption than my beloved towel solution (hey it works wonders compared with nothing ). I have also considered just buying some material and cutting small pieces and sticking it right to the back of the TV. Just little pieces so it doesn't help warm up the TV. Not sure how effective that would be. Basically right now what's happening is the metal TV back is acting like a tunnel and giving me like an echo effect. Hanging a TV right on the wall adds unwanted reflection, but having it away adds "tunnel." At least with tunnel I can control it, which is good. A 24 x 48 panel will give a lot of coverage, but I might be able to see it from the sides of the TV. I'm going to have to take some measurements. 24 x 36 might be better in terms of looks. Decisions decisions. Thanks guys!

A buddy of mine ordered some bass traps and panels from ats and IMO the build quality of the bass traps is brutal, the triangle plastic tops on 3of them were half falling off straight out of the box, really cheap on the glue usage, my DIY panels are made better, the only thing I liked better on the ATS panels was the material as I just used cheap walmart sheets Chad

Hey "Trapman," well actually, while I know my room could probably benefit from some acoustical panels, my room as is is pretty good. It's got full wall to wall carpet, a large "L" shaped cloth sectional couch, a large cloth recliner, only 1 small window, pictures & things hung around the room, a back wall made largely from my "slotted" CD case, a 92" ceiling, and a large ceiling fan almost dead center. My room passes the "clap" test very well. It's not overly lively or overly dead. I think if I did anything I might put some panels down one side to balance the couch on the other. I also need at least one bass trap in one back corner. I'll get to it, but for now I just need to take care of my immediate "even the wife notices it" problem.

I was hoping the quality would be close to homemade. I mean what else are you really paying for.

I have just sent a communication to ATS about our conserns in the quality of their products, we await their reply. I'll keep all abreast of this post.
Actions speak volumes, let's see what happens.

Hey guys
I'm about to make some panels, and I'm in the mist of purchasing the absorbing material. I'm not too sure as to what should I go with. Corning fiber glass stuff ( which sounds dangerous as hell), or the cotton insulation from recycle material!
I don't really mind the price for the eco friendly insulation as it isn't a big difference in price, but want to know if they're practical for diy projects, and ultimately for sounds panel room taming.
Thanks
Dan
