Will an Airport Express only "see" music from Itunes and Airplay or will it also see music from other music apps?

I've used mine to stream JRiver, iTunes, and Airplay. Worked fine.

Will an Airport Express only "see" music from Itunes and Airplay or will it also see music from other music apps? It essentially becomes an available 'speaker' you can select from OS X and iOS devices, so if the Airport is selected then all audio from the device can be routed to the Airport.

You can do either- the stereo minijack doubles as a minitoslink out.

Assuming you're on a Mac and using a recent OS X (10.10 - Yosemite is current), you can go into the System Preferences > Sound > Output and you should see your Airplay devices. Choose the one you want and ALL audio from your computer will be directed to that device. I don't use JRiver so Boom or someone else will have to answer if it is AirPlay enabled directly like iTunes (so that only Music goes to the speaker), but if it was I'd expect to see the standard triangle/box speaker selector icon (though to be honest I don't know if I've seen that on any 3rd party software). Edit: Forgot to mention I believe you also need a 2011 or newer Mac to do this in system config.

You can do either- the stereo minijack doubles as a minitoslink out. Yes, if you use an analog 3.5 to RCA cable you're using the AirPort's DAC and you'd go directly to the USP-1, if you use a TOSLink cable it's digital and you'd run to the XDA-1 as your DAC. Flexibility if you need it.

To Audiobill's point, the airport express is both analog and optical out, but why not DAC-it to get the best sound.
