Where can I read about and how to measure and use a component rack? how big of one do I need? Do you leave space between components?
Whats your experience with one? Do you like it? What pitfalls are there? looking into getting more accessible to my gear.
what do I need to know? Im sure there are others with these questions, I'm brave enough to ask " The Stupid Question "
Yes, I've seen the ,Sanus, just don't know what I need to know?
Please help yee of little knowledge!! 8)

I like 1 ru blank between components or a cooling device between them. Racks come in 2 general configurations. Single rack in the front or a rack in the front and back. I prefer to have the later for organizing and stability. For each piece of gear I like a cable bar for the rear rack to keep cables organized. Racks are bulky and you need the proper space to use one. They come with and without casters. With and without doors and side panels. Hope this gets you started. Tony

Knockdown racks are a good way to save money as they ship flat. I have used them and found them very sturdy when assembled. There are cheaper options than Sanus or Middle Atlantic.

Check out the manufacturers websites and documentation. They should give you how many RU (rack units are). You can get blanks or spaces to give room for components to breath. You can total up the number of RU that you need and pick a rack with that spec. I would opt to one a bit larger to add flexibility as you add or change components. Here are a couple of links that might be helpful. www2.middleatlantic.com/company/Marketingfiles/bro/integratingrack.pdfMy second link didn't work. I just Googled "Middle Atlantic Airflow in Rack" check out the first link.

I use a Compaq server rack that I picked up for 75$ off craigslist.

Get more than you think you need. Allow for 1 RU between components as ansat mentioned. I have two above my XPA-1Ls since they will run hot in class A mode. Some components may not need any space between it and other components such as power strips/conditioners. If your going to mount something on a shelf in the rack, allow an exta RU as the shelf and feet will take up more vertical space than something that is rack mountable. I would recommend rack ears for anything you can get them for such as your XPA amps as it will save space. So just add up the total RU space requirements of you gear, add 1 RU for each component, maybe add 1 RU for anything to be placed on a shelf and you should be good to go.

I currently use a 42ru and use racktools 3.5 as a layout program.
