I had the chance last week to firstly test & try at my place and then set up a system for a friend of mine (yes, another Emotiva devote) that consisted of an Apple TV, with an Emotiva toslink interconnect to an XDA-2 and connected in turn via Emotiva RCA's to a pair of Airmotive 6's. Following advice on here plus my discussions with him about my Airmotive 4's he decided that Airmotive 6's were the go. I didn't have a lot of time with the system on my own as it was a hectic week, far too much on plus some out of town work. But I did make enough time to listen to and appreciate how great that simple system sounded. Playing some iTunes lossless tracks via the ATV it sounded very good, highly detailed, great sound stage, plenty of grunt even in the lower frequencies. It is also very revealing, play a crappy track and it sounds very crappy. Not at all tolerant of overly compressed, MP3 level nasties. Even a non golden ear, iPod, listener commented "that track sounds terrible".
Once I had it set up for him I tried a cheap, very cheap, Sony BD player, again connected via the Emotiva toslink cable. Playing some quality classical recordings, the sound was another step upwards, detailed, fast transients, invisible noise floor and huge projection out into the room. Nobody listening could believe the quality of sound from such a cheap BD player and a minimalist system. What we get out of a DAC and pair of powered speakers for under $1K (delivered to Sydney) is simply amazing. Another friend of mine (yes, I have more than one friend, amazing huh) had a listen to the system and straight away requested a quote from Emotiva for a pair of Airmotive 6's.
In summary, if you have need for a bedroom, study, office system, I don't believe that you will get anything close to that sound quality for 3+ times as much.
Cheers
