hi y'all. i just traded my UPA-1's to emo for some new XPA-1L gen 2 amps. they should be here by a week from fri. was wondering if anyone can tell the difference between class A and class A/B operation and if it sounds any better in class A. thanks, john (the way i set these amps up may depend on the answer to this question)

They sound wonderful in either mode.

It will depend on your speakers, ears, and listening environment if you can detect any differences between the two modes.

I have the XPA-1 Gen 2, and while not night and day the difference is quite audible to me in my system. Both modes sound great and as rule we use the Class A/B mode for movies but when listening to music I always flip the switch to Class A. They will get hot in Class A or at least mine do. Briefly I would describe Class A mode as fuller, richer and more immersive with a bit more flesh on the bones.
Hope this helps

My opinion on the difference is that Class A has slightly more clarity in the upper mid and high frequencies, no difference that I have ever heard in the lower mids and lows. I had Class A only amps for decades and swapped to Class AB when it became very difficult (ie; almost impossible) to pick the difference. So don't expect it to slap you in the face, if you notice it at all it will be very subtle. Obviously it's ears, room acoustics and speaker dependant.
Cheers Gary

Running the 1L's on my Monitor Audio RX6 towers in an acoustic treated room I never noticed any difference with any music I listened to, that's my experience, it sounded so good in class a/ab it didn't bother me any Chad

Is it better to leave the amp on all the time and just switch from A to A/B when done with the listening or I could leave it at the A all the time and put it to standby via trigger (I assume the standby will put the power off from the transformer) ?

Testing an XPA-1L currently and I use the trigger from the pre amp /processor to turn the amp to standby, orange LED, status. I have the switch in Class AB position as HT consumes most of its operation time. When I want to do some critical music listening I flick the switch to Class A.
Cheers Gary

I was more referring to whether it was healthier for the amp to leave it on and set the switch to AB instead of putting it to the standby mode and leaving the switch in the class A position (assuming the standby mode will remove the power from the transformer so there will be no excessive heating and waist of energy).

I honestly cannot tell a difference, it could be my aging ears but I do know the amp(s) just sound fantastic. Enjoy your purchase.

If it was me I would put the switch to AB mode when you are not listening and leave it turned on the whole time. Now this is just my experience but I find the amps sound better when uh "warmed up" so to speak. Most obvious difference felt pretty quickly but after a day or so there feels to me a better quality to them. But in terms of "health" honestly, I don't think there's much real difference but if you had to choose healthwise then I guess off is more healthy?!
