I want to take the Optical out from my TV into a TOSLink to Balanced output adapter or through a cheap dac which has TOSLink in and balanced out. Trying to stay $100 or less.

I would just pick one up from Monoprice.

I would just pick one up from Monoprice. I do not see that they sell one. Nor Parts-Express either.

I think I misread your post. You are looking for an adapter, not a cable correct? I first read it as you were looking for an inexpensive Toslink cable.

Right. I need a Toslink to balanced adapter much like I have a Toslink to RCA adapter, but cannot find such a thing without buying a full fledged and typically $fancy$ DAC.

There is no such thing.....toslink is optical, balanced is analog, so you need a d/a converter with balanced outs........cheap xda-1.

Is there a reason it has to have balanced outs?

There is no such think.....toslink is optical, balanced is analog, so you need a d/a converter with balanced outs........cheap xda-1. I was thinking the same thing, but if instead of 'balanced' he means XLR then you could go from a TOSLink to coax digital adapter, then through a RCA to XLR adapter and into an AES/EBU port of a DAC. But that's not what he wants so you're right. I want to take the Optical out from my TV into a TOSLink to Balanced output adapter or through a cheap dac which has TOSLink in and balanced out. Trying to stay $100 or less. Maybe you can find a used XDA-1 for $100.

Is there a reason it has to have balanced outs? For very stupid reason. I bought a balanced control freak and wanted to use it, and I am hooking up to Airmotiv 6's and wanted to use the balanced inputs, but as mentioned I will need a Dac to translate digital to analog and apparently doing that cheap is not easy. So I will need to get a cheap dac and likely sell the control freak.

You guys got it. I totally forgot the XDA -1 had balanced out.

You could use a Behringer UCA202 ($25) and a Monoprice RCA to XLR cable ($5).
Cheers Gary

Thanks Gary, but I have an TOSlink to RCA adapter and a pair of XLR to RCA cables. I was just trying to clean up the path and cables a bit if I could do on the cheap. I totally forgot the XDA-1 had balanced output so I will pick one up soon.
