Hi Keith, much appreciated for the few minutes of advice. Turns out the weird compressed noise was the USB cable after all. I connected another computer with a short run USB to it and volia! the DAC works like a charm! 
So after pulling the cable out of the ceiling, it turned out to be a new shielded 30ft cable with a repeater in it 
! Yank. It's gone. I am now ordering a long optical cable from monoprice and will try that instead.
So anyone with very weird compressed noise through USB check the cables........
