Hi buddy, been there,,,,,done that!!!! JRivers has pleased a file on your hard drive of the songs and titles etc. not the music it's self. Kind of a system as to what you have and where to go get it. You need to look and see where it placed these files and delete them! First make sure the external hard drive is disconnected, then you can't delet the music. Delete all files associated with JRivers that titles music or file system. It takes some digging but can be found, this is how I did it. Even if you delete JRivers those dang files that are associated with your music will still be there,,,,,,so you have to find them, do a media search each time you think you found and deleted them . Hope this helps, yes it's a paint in the ARSSS but once you figure it out and do all of your install you may get it right. I ended up with multiple files pointing to the same song, so I'm still a mess as well, I haven't figured out or had time to spend on there forum!,! That's where the answers must lie!! Edit: good luck and God help us!!!!! What's weird was that I had cover art from an old external hard drive which I delete the library by mistake at the time, and all of sudden it was back with my newer files I was ripping. Strange indeed Thanks Djoel

I use foobar2000 instead of JRiver. The good news is that it doesn't have this problem of not wanting to play files, and the bad news is that if you paid money for JRiver then you paid money for something that doesn't work right when in fact you could have simply gotten for free something (foobar2000) that does work, but... to each their own I guess...
EDIT — For ripping CDs, I use dBpoweramp R15.1 Reference (with the Batch Ripper option).

Hi djoel - The first rule of music servers is "nothing is easy." If you go the iTunes route, you either do it completely their way (letting iTunes manage everything) or you get into the ditch very quickly. JRiver allows somewhat more flexibility, but at the price of a steeper learning curve. The ultimate problem with BOTH JRiver and iTunes is that they keep all the metadata in their own separate databases. If their database becomes corrupt (and in my experience, it does, and routinely), then the only way to sort things out is to delete the music library, then point the software to the location and let it rebuild its database. My experience is that although JRiver doesn't lose much music, it almost always loses some cover art and then downloads something from the internet that is NOT what should be there. Ultimately, I've decided that I don't really care about the cover art provided that the program doesn't erase or lose music. It can be very frustrating if you're trying to manage directories manually (I do). If you use the JRiver ripping software, sometimes it will combine two albums with the same title that have nothing to do with each other. "Greatest Hits" is a prime example. Then I have to manually separate the two albums and move them into separate directories with different names. Then I have to let the program reindex all my music (takes about an hour). The best way to deal with all this is to accept the fact that even the best music software drops stuff routinely. Once you expect mediocre performance, you'll not be so frustrated with it when it happens (and it will). Sometimes the only option is an intermission where you go do something else until the irritation passes. Good luck - and if you find anything that works well for you, please share it! PS - Unlike Nick, I do NOT recommend deleting ANYTHING. It takes too much time to rip it for you to do it again. Even if you start from scratch and re-rip, there's no guarantee that you won't have exactly the same problems again. Merry Christmas - Boom Hey Boom Believe me I loath Itunes as much as the next guy I just use them out of convenience pretty much, I also have music I've collected/purchased during the years I do not want to leave on there! I like my Apple TV, I do have two Ipads so I sometimes feel like I'm stuck with Itunes when in realty I know I'm not. Sure they're on the simple side of this game, but their quirkiness drives me insane. I'm really hoping Jriver will work out for me, I have a few movies on there as well so fingers cross! Thanks for the insight guys Djoel

Just like foobar2000, it is also free and is receiving regular updates where the developers know what they are doing (as opposed to seeming like they know, charging money for it, and then ultimately showing you that they really don't know).

I thought I specified that. kind if like throwing out the system that catalogs the music, and then when you connect the external hard drive,,,let JRivers find and catalog the music again. Nick

Hey any of you gents use Jriver with your Sonos system? I was wondering how I would make the Sonos software recognize the Jriver library... I don't see it in the server list, or anywhere else sync them up.
Thanks
Dan

As long as your music is on a shared drive, Sonos can create its own library from it...and I do that so I can access all my music from either jriver or Sonos. So, there is no need for Sonos to access Jriver's library.

Hey Mark, I sorta figured it out...It doesn't sound as good as what I hear from Spotify, or Pandora but it plays..I just need to see why it's lower quality.
Thanks for the response

I use both J River and MediaMonkey. Took me a while to figure out J River in the beginning, so don't feel bad. Try the free download of MediaMonkey - that's the only version of MM version I use. It is much simpler to use than J River in my opinion. I found Foobar to be a pain in the a-- but lots of people like it. Thanks I'll check out MM and see if I fancy it, if it's simple and sounds great then I'm there. I'm currently not using a SSP just my TV via HDMI from HTPC, so JRMC is decoding in 5.1! How can I downmix to two channels? Thanks Dan To downmix to 2 channels: Choose Tools -> Options. In the options window in the left pane, choose Media network.. In the right pane click on "Add or configure DLNA servers". Another window pops up, "DLNA Servers". Choose the server you are using (I use Audiophile 24-bit DAC) with a single click. In the menu underneath choose Audio -> Advanced. Check "Stereo downmix". Click OK on the "DLNA Servers" window, and then OK on the Options window. And yes, JRiver can be a bit of a pain to set up, but it's a lot simpler than most, and works pretty good "out of the box". I use it and Foobar 2000. I go with Foobar when I want the best sound possible, and am willing to put up with it's quirks. Most of the time I go with JRiver. Almost as good a sound, and not near as many quirks.

Thank you, I found the issue some time ago, but will look into Foobar and see what I think. Hopefully they play nice together.
Cheers
