Same song playing on two sources at same time. Source 1: iPhone streaming to / airport express/ toslink / XDA-2 at 44.1 (spotify premium 320) Source 2: laptop windows media player / usb / XDA 2 at 192 (FLAC)
I switched back and forth between the two sources and source 1 is much better sounding. i would go as far to say that source 2 sounds terrible compared to source 1.
What could be causing this? I'm using a high quality USB cable. I know windows media player doesn't support FLAC but I downloaded a codec pac to enable FLAC and other HD audio support. Any ideas?

My guess is that one of the weakest link in your system is not suitable for 192. Also just checking, have you tried some other high quality music? I actually came across some 192 Flac files online, which were made of 128k MP3 file, in which case you know..
My XDA-2 sounds better with higher bit music files. But, Spotify 320k sounds very good as well.
Other things I can think of is a driver issue, or windows media players incompatibility with 192 FLAC file. I didn't know WMP played FLAC, but I haven't checked for 3 years at least on this topic. Have you tried Amarra? You can use the free trial just nail down on your problems.

I recommend XMPlay as a player on your PC. It's really good and.. free! It handles pretty much all the formats out there.

Just remember to download the plugins for the file-types that aren't natively supported. I've been using it as my default player for the past 10 years!

For high quality playback in Windows I recommend to use ASIO OR WASAPI modes. That is the only way to eliminate the Windows sound mixer in between. Which is why your flac, although being played is loosing quality. Jriver, foobar and media monkey are ones that support those other modes. Maybe other people know of another program that support those modes. I myself use Jriver.
